A popular place to eat in Freetown is Tessa’s Restaurant. One can dine either in the dining room or garden; the restaurant offers a glorious selection of authentic Sierra Leone cuisine. Tessa is also the name of a pup that was lost, but then found, leading to a lot of media attention. Tessa’s mom, Amanda Hulebak and her husband are committed to rescuing dogs, whether from parking lots or animal shelters. Thus, they have had many dogs in their lives. The memory of two dogs that she lost, however, was never out of her mind after someone opened the gate to her back yard and canine pals Tessa and Ray got out. Despite searching for them for more than a year, she never found them. Eventually, she gave up hope of seeing them again.

After six years, however, she received a call from Missouri City Animal Control. Apparently, they had taken in a dog with a microchip that had her name and contact information. Hulebak knew that the dog was either Tessa or Ray. It turned out to be Tessa, and their reunion was recorded and posted on her Facebook page. Tessa wound up being adopted at another shelter and then she ran away from her adoptive home. Hulebak is not sure why the shelter did not scan her to see if she had a microchip that could help her reconnect to her family.

Tessa is now around eight years old, having grown from an energetic puppy to a senior pup. Tessa appeared to have missed Hulebak, and recognized her during their reunion, immediately crawling into her lap just as she used to.

Another dog by the name of Tessa received media attention after being dumped by her owners at a city shelter in Los Angeles. In poor health and very malnourished, Tessa was scheduled to be euthanized within days. Fortunately, a woman named Annie Hart, the executive director of the Bill Foundation, a rescue organization in Beverly Hills that rehabilitates and finds homes for dogs that were in shelters and on the streets was able to help her out. Hart heard about Tessa from a shelter worker and went to save the pup, finding her in worse shape than she had anticipated, both blind and unable to walk.

Hart brought Tessa to her home to recover and brought her to the veterinarian for a variety of tests. Tessa was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, which is water on the brain. It was thought that the condition developed in utero and that Tessa did not have any symptoms until recently. Due to the hydrocephalus, Tessa became blind and developed a condition that led to her feeling very dizzy. These conditions led to her being unable to walk. Initially, doctors agreed that Tessa would not recover. Hart, however, refused to give up and put the pup on a treatment plan of both Eastern and Western medicine, after which Tessa began to show improvement. Soon, Tessa began responding to light and is now walking and running. While still mostly blind, she has learned to use her other senses to get around and feed herself. According to Hart, Tessa, “taught me a lot. She’s a reminder that you can always find a way to live-no matter what cards you’re dealt”.
