It would be amiss if we didn’t mention a very politically famous dog named Nemo. This Nemo, a Labrador-Griffon cross, joined Emmanuel Macron, the French President’s entourage. He is a rescue dog that President Macron acquired. This follows the tradition of having a First Dog. His first duty was to greet Niger’s President, Mahamadou Issoufou.

Another dog in the spotlight is Dory, a female black Labrador. In the film, Dory, along with Nemo’s father, travel to find Nemo. In the movie, the character of Dory is a regal blue tang who suffers from a short-term memory loss. The canine Dory is a guide dog to Rozelle Smit, who is visually impaired. Dory was trained in Santon through the South African Guide Dog Association, who employs volunteers for raising and training guide dogs.

The next dog in the spotlight is Marlin, the Alaskan Malamute. Marlin, a 130-pound dog, cuddles with stressed-out college students, kids in hospitals, or whenever he wants to be happy. As a certified therapy dog, he spends his day calming and caring for others. Sadly, Marlin has been having seizures since he was 3-years-old, and was later diagnosed to have idiopathic epilepsy. After months of treatment, Marlin hasn’t had a single seizure since they implanted a Vagus Nerve Stimulator (VNS). In the movie, the character of Marlin is Nemo’s father, who is a clownfish.

As of February 2018, Mansfield Shelter has had a dog named Peaches. Peaches, a 6-year-old spayed Pit Bull mix, is named because she is ‘a peach of a dog’ with everyone that she encounters. Volunteers at the Mansfield Shelter describe Peaches as a dog that likes to snuggle and be petted. She also enjoys car rides. In this fun film, the character Peach is the starfish in the fish tank.

In January of 2018, three Butler County family dogs competed in Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XIV. Bubbles was one of those mutts who was born in the Animal Friends Humane Society. They competed in the title for Most Valuable Puppy and the Lombarky Trophy. Bubbles was a part of the Team Fluff for the Puppy Bowl. In the movie, Bubbles is a yellow tang fish in the fish tank.

In May 2017, there was a new service dog going into training in the WUSA 9’s Service Dog Project. After a thousand voters participated, the chosen moniker for the next service dog was announced to be Nigel who won with 519 votes. Nigel was entered through the Canine Companions for Independence, a California organization that specializes in providing service dogs to children with autism, people with disabilities, and to veterans.
