While stories of dogs and sports are usually ones of epic feats, resilience, effort and top notch brains, unfortunately, they’re not all good. In fact, sports stories in general often bear similar weight, even figure skating, like the story of Tonya Harding having her ex-husband hire a hit man to damage competitor Nancy Kerrigan’s legs in order to keep her from competing.

But then again, many of these tragic stories also end in the best way possible, which happens to be the case for Cherry, one of the 50-plus Pit Bulls rescued from NFL star Michael Vick’s kennel and illegal dog fighting ring.

From what the rescuers know, Cherry’s life certainly wasn’t easy. Out of the more than 50 dogs rescued, he was one of the unlucky few to be considered the most traumatized by the experience. After being taken to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary’s Dogtown in Utah, a facility specifically designed for training, rehab and medical care, they saw exactly how bad how condition was. He was not only nervous about new people, but was extremely anxious just to be on a leash. It was to the point where every time they hooked him up, he would flatten himself on the ground in fear.

Despite his nervousness, he showed signs of life. As soon as he was left on his own in the dog run, he would run around excitedly. The very first time he was let out of his crate and allowed to run free, he immediately grabbed a toy and playfully threw it up in the air. But the after effects weren’t soon forgotten either. As soon as anything new was introduced to him, he completely shut down. He also had lingering signs of his former life in the form of large scars and even a case of cherry eye, which had to be surgically repaired.

Eventually, while caretakers kept him in quiet, relaxed environments, he decided to approach them for attention. Once he realized they weren’t going to hurt him, he began to ask more often. It was the beginning of a significant turnaround. Although the first introduction to other dogs ended less hopeful than rescuers expected, their second attempt proved to be worthwhile, as he quickly attached to the dog known as Handsome Dan (another “Vicktory” dog from the dog fighting ring) and even let his guard down with the people around him. After more playdates, his personality really began to shine. The one-time forced dog fighter was really a goofball at heart.

After arriving to Best Friends in January of 2008, his adoption papers were finalized just 14 months later. And while he was still nervous with strangers, the couple who adopted him’s kind-hearted Pit Bull helped him open up to them, eventually leading to a happy home filled with children and cats as well, all of which get along swimmingly.

Figure Skating Inspired Dog Name Considerations

The biggest considerations when giving your dog a figure skating inspired name will be whether you aim to title them after a great skater or one of many elements used in the sport. Since there will likely be few commonalities in looks, make a short list of their personality traits, tendencies, and breed origin, as these are likely the easiest to work off of.

For instance, if your dog is an Ovcharka, then Oksana would be a great name as both are famous Ukrainians. If they are a Borzoi or a Russkiy Toy, then the names Plushenko or Petrenko would both be suitable along with numerous others during the Russian reign of gold medal winning pairs.

You can use the elements to your advantage as well. If your dog has a funny or awkward jump, as if doing a figure skating move, then names Flip, Lutz, Salchow and Axel would all be great fits. If they tend to spin when they get excited, then the names Arabesque, Biellman, Charlotte and Kerrigan would all be equally suitable.

While the options may be limited in finding clever connections, nothing is stopping you from just naming them after a favorite. After all, there might not be anything more suitable than naming your favorite dog after your favorite skater!
