Introduction
While hockey might be more synonymous with ice than fields to westerners, in much of the rest of the world, field hockey reigns supreme. Even its history stretches far beyond the North American concept, as field hockey is believed to date as far back as Ancient Greece. From its inception, it spread all over the world with various cultures from China to South America all playing a similar game, making it easily one of the most tenured and widespread sports on Earth. So whether you’re modern fan or a history buff, rest assured you’ll have found your dog a good fit with a field hockey inspired name.
Field Hockey Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
Any sport that has a ball small enough for a dog to play with is a sport most dogs will attempt to play at some point, if given the chance. In fact, many owners have recently discovered that the field or street hockey balls that are seemingly just as impossible to lose as they are to destroy make fantastic and cheap dog toys, and tempting ones at that — just ask anyone who’s tried to play field or street hockey near a dog.
One of the most famous canine celebrities in the sport is a dog that went semi-viral back in 2013. During a match between Germany and England, in the middle of the Angentina Hockey World League Final, an official blew a seemingly random whistle. But as the players stopped play and looked around, they noticed a dog bounding onto the field, playfully sprinting down the sideline before veering towards the players and ball. As officials approached, it quickly laid down, sensing it had done something wrong, then rolled over to the laughter of the audience, players and commentators, before finally being carried off the field.
But there are times when dogs are much more welcome on the pitch. Two years later, the Fédération Internationale de Hockey, commonly known as the FIH (or International Hockey Federation in English) began promoting a video from a site looking to share information on the sport as a means of international proliferation. It featured Belgian field hockey star Thomas Briels practicing passing drills and evasive maneuvers with what looks to be a chocolate Lab, who is wholly intent on stealing the ball away from him. The dog not only has a ball in the process, but gives both Briels and his playing partner some good keep away practice.
But of course, who could forget Crusoe, the multi-talented sports dog with some serious style? While Crusoe and his brother Oakley are likely better known for their skiing, police work and minion costumes, they’ve also dabbled in hockey as well, with similarly hilarious results. Outfitted with front-facing hockey outfits (with their front legs through the costume’s legs, giving the appearance of a two-legged runner), the two duke it out in street hockey in the most hilarious of fashions. The best part? Watching them attack the ball not with their hockey sticks which are mounted on little fake arms, but with their faces, picking up the ball and scurrying while they chew on it happily.
Field Hockey Inspired Dog Name Considerations
When trying to come up with an appropriate field hockey inspired dog name, first consider what avenue you’d likely think is most suitable. If you care more about the players and team than the game itself, consider giving your pup a named based on one of those categories. It can be as simple as that. If you love the game as a whole and want to attribute some more meaning or try to be clever, start by making a list of your dog’s most prominent traits as a basis for comparison, then start to run down our list.
For instance, if your dog loves to retrieve balls and drop them in front of you like an official, then the names Bully and Ref would both be good. If they’re always running at you when you have a toy or treat, then Charger would be a great fit. If they always try to protect their toys instead of giving them up, then the names Defender or Goalie would certainly be suitable. If they’re constantly breaking the rules, such as running under your feet or being too reckless, then the names Redcard, Greencard, Tripper and Trapper would all work.
There are plenty of ways you can go with it, just don’t be afraid to get creative on your way to the end goal.
