Introduction
Father of the Bride Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
This is the third year the eight-year-old dog attended the Marathon with his owner, Rich Powers. Spencer is usually accompanied by his niece Penny, but this year, because of the nasty weather, Penny stayed at home while Spencer carried on the tradition of attending the race.
Since then, Spencer has become a celebrity. After his owner posted a video of Spencer waving the flags, he went viral. The video has been viewed more than one million times on Facebook and Spencer has made appearances on the Today Show and multiple other outlets. Even the international media is perking up their ears about Spencer and his flag waving.
Powers says he is overwhelmed by the attention the video has received. Powers, who is the owner of a photography studio that specializes in pet photography, says he is happy that Spencer was able to give the runners some encouragement and spread a little joy throughout the world.
Because that's what Spencer does. He and Penny are therapy dogs who visit hospitals, schools, assisted living facilities, and other places where people are that could use some cheering up. Several times a month, Spencer and Penny go visiting and help spread a little happiness to those who can use it most. The pair of Goldens love spending time with people and the people love spending time with the dogs. The dogs thrive on the attention that is showered on them. It is their job, after all.
This part of the job might be a little out of the box, but the runners were definitely in need of some cheering up by the time they spotted Spencer waving them on from the sidelines. It seemed to help them forget for a few minutes how cold and wet and tired they were. Some of them even stopped to take selfies or share a hug. Good boy, Spencer. Good boy.
