Introduction

Often touted as the "First Family of Superheroes," the Fantastic Four are one of the oldest and most well known superhero groups in all of fiction. The group consists of four family members and friends; internationally lauded scientist and world class intellect Reed Richards helms the team as Mr. Fantastic, his loving wife, Susan Storm, acts as the team's second in command under her Invisible Woman moniker, Sue's younger brother Johnny provides firepower for the team as the Human Torch, and close friend of the family, Ben Grimm, backs the team up as The Thing. The Fantastic Four are opposed by their long time nemesis, the villainous Victor von Doom.

Puppy

While he doesn't exactly have the most unique name in the world, this dog wins major points for the loyalty and bravery he's displayed during very dangerous and tense moments in the Marvel Universe. Puppy is one the more obscure characters in the Marvel universe, having first appeared in the comics during Fantastic Four Vol 3 #9 all the way back in September of 1998. As you've undoubtedly noticed, Puppy has what can only be described as a biological antennae protruding from his head. Fans of the Inhumans superhero group might initially think it strange to see Puppy bear such a striking resemblance to the Royal Family's own crime fighting canine... that is, until they learn that Puppy is one of Lockjaw's children.

As the progeny of the Inhuman's teleporting Bulldog, Puppy is also capable of teleporting himself and others across vast distances with seemingly little to no effort. While Puppy's father heavily resembles a Terran Bulldog, Puppy physically favors a Bloodhound more than any other real world dog breed. Puppy also an extraordinary sense of smell, as well as an extremely keen sense of hearing; both of which allow him to find and track down individuals who would otherwise be nigh impossible to detect. Conversely, Puppy is also great at hiding away and concealing his location. Even Kraven the hunter, whose skills as a tracker are second to none, had a difficult time finding Puppy during his debut.

Puppy was ultimately saved from Kraven's clutches by Spider-Man, Johnny Storm, and a heroine by the name of Caledonia. The super powered pup was grateful to be saved from the machinations of the Marvel Universe's greatest hunter, but the poor pooch would eventually be left to fend for himself unless the Human Torch, Spidey, and Caledonia could come together and find Puppy and a wanting owner with a safe and comfy home. The three heroes searched high and low in their attempt to find a home for Puppy, but they weren't able to find either a friend or family member who'd be willing to care for dog. That is, at least until the trio presented Puppy to Johnny's nephew, Franklin Richards.

Franklin and Puppy became fast friends, as their two friendly yet bashful personalities meshed incredibly well together. Happy to have found a home for the Inhuman Puppy, Johnny, Spider-Man, and Caledonia left Franklin and Puppy to their own devices, content that they were able to help a Fantastic boy find a Fantastic dog.

Fantastic Four Inspired Dog Name Considerations

The Fantastic Four's powers were given to them after the group were bombarded with cosmic rays during an outer space expedition. Each of them received powers that matched their personalities in a variety of ways. Mr. Fantastic's ability to stretch and elongate his body adequately matches his expansive intellect and his initially distant and aloof demeanor. Susan Storm was initially only able to turn herself invisible (a reflection of her tendency to undervalue herself,) but she later learned to project and manipulate powerful force fields once she began to adopt more forceful and assertive personality traits. Johnny was extremely hot headed early on, but he also possesses a very lively and warm personality that attracts others to him. Ben's transformation into a massive, rocky golem might seem extreme until you take into account Ben's tendencies of viewing himself as a protector of others and being very guarded and reserved with his innermost feelings.

So while the members of the Fantastic Four may not physically resemble any dogs by any stretch of the imagination, each of them share personality traits with many well known breeds. Consider naming an energetic dog Johnny, or Torch after the Human Torch, or a very kind yet stern dog Susan, after the Invisible Woman.
