Introduction
Famous Landmark Dog Names in Pop Culture
Though this beautiful furry soul passed away in January 2013, his traveling legacy and his amazing story told via photos live on even now. He’s still known as the animal kingdom's globetrotter. Oscar was an Alsatian, Corgi, Cocker Spaniel, and Basset Hound rescue, and he met his mom Joanne Lefson in 2009. She discovered Oscar in Cape Town, South Africa.
As Oscar traveled the world, he did it with a purpose. He not only spent time with his dog mom but also raised awareness about dogs on the streets. In fact, he brought the planet’s attention to more than 475 million homeless pets across the globe. Bow WOW!
This happy doggo visited Disneyland, Hollywood, the Walk of Fame, Las Vegas, the Statue of Liberty, the Great Wall of China, the Egyptian Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, the Eiffel Tower, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Christ the Redeemer, and many other famous landmarks. He rode camels, visited with locals worldwide, and even went skydiving. He traveled to five continents and twenty-nine countries. We think we can all agree that Oscar truly lived.
When he was rescued he was five years old, and maybe his life didn’t really begin until the day he met Joanne. She sold her house, and the two traveled the world. Joanne called their 6-month trip “The World Woof Tour.” She openly confessed that if she hadn’t gone to find Oscar that day, he would have been put down. He had one more day to live. However, Joanne changed all that, and boy, what a life he lived. It inspires one to visit a shelter and rescue a sweet canine soul, doesn’t it? That fur baby waiting for you has a purpose and can even help you change the world and do some good in it. Joanne and Oscar’s mission was to see that shelter and street dogs found loving homes.
All along, Joanne said she wanted to show people that shelter dogs were awesome. There seems to be a sort of stigma surrounding them. People assume that they’re abused, tired, old, disturbed, and even dangerous. But Oscar wasn’t like that, and there are countless others like him waiting for their chance to be loved.
Maybe we can’t all travel the world Oscar-style, but this gorgeous creature left us with a lesson. Never lose hope. A bright day is coming, and you can bring a lot of joy to people simply by being yourself.
Famous Landmark Dog Name Considerations
There are seemingly endless possibilities when you think about naming your beloved canine companion after a famous landmark. We do recommend giving them a title that means something to you and your family. If you and your family travel to Paris every summer, then you might name your new Dachshund “Eiffel.” He’s long and maybe even skinny like that iconic tower. If your Weimaraner is a little lady, you might name her after America’s favorite lady herself, “Liberty.”
Maybe you can’t get enough of the world’s gorgeous cathedrals: consider tags like “Peter,” “Paul,” “Basil,” “Dame,” or “Sistine.” If you’re into palaces, try “Windsor,” “Bucky,” or “Edin.” If you want your friends and family to make an immediate connection, opt for a dog title like “Empire,” “Taj,” “Everest,” “Ellis,” “Pisa,” “Brooklyn,” “London,” or “Niagara.” You can always look back through your old photo albums and reminisce about trips gone by. You’ll have some fun walking down memory lane and possibly discover the pawfect moniker for your pup! If you’ve been dreaming of a certain place you want to get to in your lifetime, name your doggo after that dreamy destination. Every time you call them or look at their collar, you’ll be reminded of your goal. Perhaps you can even take your dog with you. You can’t beat your puppy “China” standing on the Great Wall, after all!
