Introduction
Historia Magistra vitae est, or in English, History is the teacher of life is a saying almost as old as time (okay maybe not that old) uttered by none other than Cicero. This famous quote has never been more true, more important, or more relevant than today. In this day and age when many bad events are happening around the world, we as a society seem to have forgotten what our ancestors taught us. That’s why it is important to study history, to promote it, and to always be aware of the fact that whatever happens, history will always be there to remind us that it probably happened before too, and that we can learn from it.
Famous Historian Dog Names in Pop Culture
If you have ever been a fan of the underdog stories, you’re going to love Cato’s! The adorable mutt has a real rags to riches story that many humans wish they had! This brown and white doggo was just a regular old street dog in Mexico City, home to many strays when luck decided to shine its rays on him and offer him the opportunity of a lifetime. What happened you ask? Well, nothing special, he was just noticed by animal trainers who were in Mexico City filming a movie! The filming company wanted to have dogs that looked like Mexican street dogs in the background, and Cato happened to be one of these doggos. Cato stood out from the crowd and charmed the hearts of the animal trainers who ultimately decided to take him back to the States with them and train the sweet pupper to become a movie star! Talk about charming!
After he came to Hollywood, animal trainer Robert Scott Schweitzer trained Cato for about twelve weeks before the “audition”. Robert says that Cato’s pictures had to be submitted, along with the showreel of his abilities. He was auditioning for the role in Under the Dome, and none other than Dean Norris decided that Cato was to be the star of the show! The little doggo quickly became everyone’s favorite person on the set due to his friendly nature and large puppy eyes, and also because he managed to perform amazingly, with just a few bumps on the road. When he’s not on the set, Cato is a doggo that knows how to enjoy life. He and his best friend Axle, also an actor, spend their days playing in the backyard, chasing one another, or simply chilling in the shade, enjoying their superstar status. Not a bad life if you ask us!
But, what was the inspiration behind Cato’s name? Who was human Cato? Cato the Elder, also known as Cato the Wise (Cato Sapiens) or Cato the Censor (Cato Censorius) was a senator in ancient Rome, best known for his work as a historian. He was the first one to write in Latin as he was very much opposed to Hellenization. Coming from a Plebeian family, Cato worked in agriculture until he started to follow cursus honorum, which let him gain knowledge in military, politics, administration, and ultimately become a consul. Interestingly, his great-grandson is none other than Julius Caesar!
Famous Historian Dog Name Considerations
Choosing to name your new doggo after one of the many famous historians is not only a good decision because your dog will have a very cool name, but also because you will get to promote education among your friends at the dog park. Local children will always ask about the name of your pup, and when you tell them an interesting story behind it, it might inspire them to read more and learn about the history of the world, thus expanding their minds and learning how to think critically. Therefore, choosing a name such as Porcius, Cato the Elder’s middle name, can be a great way to spark up a conversation. Staying in the realm of ancient Rome, why not choose the name Tacitus, after a probably most famous historian to ever exist?
But what if you prefer ancient Greece? Worry not, as there are many options to choose from there! How about naming your pup Duris, after Duris of Samos, who recorded the historical events in Macedonia and Greece. Another great choice is Plutarch, who shaped the way we teach and learn history. Finally, if you are looking for a truly unique name you cannot go wrong with Neanthes, after Neanthes of Cyzicus!
