Introduction
The Entlebucher Sennenhund, also known as the Entlebucher Mountain Dog, is a well-muscled, medium-sized cattle dog that hails from Switzerland. This breed is an excellent watchman and enjoys playing games when not on watch duty. They are a high energy dog that can be stubborn at times. The Entlebucher Sennenhund requires early socialization and proper training. They require a job to do each day or they will quickly become bored and get themselves into a lot of mischief. Being a herding breed, the Entlebucher Sennenhund does need a sturdy fence to keep them contained or they will be running the neighborhood trying to herd cars and children. Because of their confident nature and high energy, the Entlebucher Sennenhund is not the right dog for an inexperienced dog owner.
Entlebucher Sennenhund Dog Names in Pop Culture
There are not many Entlebucher Sennenhunds that seem to make an impression on the general public. Until 2011, most people did not know what the breed was or where they had come from, that all changed when the American Kennel Club (AKC) fully recognized the Entlebucher Sennenhund as the Entlebucher Mountain Dog. While there was several of this breed competing in the AKC’s Foundation Stock Service Miscellaneous Class, none were able to achieve a conformation championship until they were fully recognized and assigned to a group. The Entlebucher Sennenhund was assigned to the herding group in 2011. The first AKC conformation Champion was Blue-Jay’s He’s A Hoss, or Hoss for short. Hoss’s kennelmate, Montana, Blue-Jay’s Wild Montana Sky, became the first female Entlebucher Sennenhund to earn an AKC conformation championship. Both Hoss and Montana went further and became the first two Entlebucher Sennenhunds to earn their AKC Grand Championships. Both dogs were handled by their owner who founded Blue Jay Entlys in 1995 and lives in Cleves, Ohio.
Hoss and Montana attended the National Dog Show in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in November of 2011. This was the first time the Entlebucher Sennenhund was seen on television at a dog show as a part of the herding group. Hoss and Montana also received invitations to the prestigious 136th Westminster Kennel Club’s dog show hosted in New York City in February of 2012. This was the first time the Entlebucher Sennenhund was invited to attend the shows as a part of the herding group. Hoss attended a press conference prior to the start of the Westminster shows to introduce the new breeds that would be competing. Then, Hoss also was invited to be in a parade in New York City to introduce the new breeds and also the reining Best in Show winner from 2011. The new breeds were invited to ring the closing bell for the NASDAC and were photographed for the Times Square jumbotron. To top off their adventure, Hoss and Montana visited the set of Good Morning America to discuss the Entlebucher Sennenhund breed.
Blue Jay Entlys came into existence when a photograph in the Atlas of Dog Breeds of the World caught the attention of a very enthusiastic Paula Lacker. After researching the breed for two years, she finally made the leap and imported her first Entlebucher Sennenhund from Europe in 1995. Hanna, her new import, could only be shown at the American Rare Breed Association (ARBA) shows and the United Kennel Club (UKC) shows. Once the Entlebucher Sennenhund was recognized by the AKC, Lacker was ready to tackle the world of AKC dog shows. She finished the first four Entlebucher Sennenhunds in AKC history and is still devoted to producing quality, healthy Entlebucher Sennenhunds.
Entlebucher Sennenhund Dog Name Considerations
For most people, the Entlebucher Sennenhund is probably not their first choice of dog breed to add to their family. However, this interesting, happy, fun-loving dog can add entertainment and companionship to your home. The Entlebucher Sennenhund is not the right breed for everyone, though; they do require an experienced dog handler and a job to do each day. They are high energy and will drive you crazy if you do not give them an outlet for all that energy. After you have researched the breed and decided the Entlebucher Sennenhund is the dog for you, you will need to find a responsible breeder. When you do finally bring your new puppy home, it will be time to find the right name for this Swiss mountain dog. Still being a relatively new breed, finding a name that honors their Swiss roots might be a good place to begin your search. There are several names that have Swiss heritage but still are a bit Americanized and easier to pronounce for everyone in your family. Be sure to take some time to get to know your new companion’s temperament before making the final decision on their name, they have a way of helping you pick a name that fits them in every way!
