English Toy Spaniel Dog Names

Most people are familiar with the English Toy Spaniel; however, this little dog has been a favored pet in the English royal court for centuries. One of the most famous English Toy Spaniels is Dash, the beloved pet of Her Majesty Queen Victoria. Dash was Queen Victoria’s constant companion for nine years. He died on December 20, 1840 and was buried at Adelaide Cottage in Windsor Home Park. The Queen was grief stricken and as a way to mourn Dash and honor his unfailing devotion to her she ordered a marble memorial be erected over his grave. She had the following as part of his epitaph put on the memorial: “His fidelity without deceit, READER If you would be beloved and die regretted, profit by the example of Dash.”

Another famous spaniel was a black and white little English Toy Spaniel owned by Mary I, Queen of Scotland. While this little dog’s name has been lost through the years, the story of his devotion has lived on in the hearts of historians. Mary I was beheaded in 1587 and the story claims her devoted little spaniel refused to leave her side and hid under her skirts when she was beheaded. After her death, her beloved pet mourned her death and refused to leave her side. Historians claim the little dog died from grief a few days after Mary I was killed. While this was a very devoted pet, he was not her first or only English Toy Spaniel. She brought several of these small dogs with her when she journeyed from France to Scotland.

The English Toy Spaniel became exceedingly popular during the reign of King Charles II in the 17^th century. King Charles II deeply loved the English Toy Spaniel and was an advocate for the breed. He claimed they were the best comforter after a stressful day of dealing with those at court. Because of his work with the breed, the English Toy Spaniel became widely accepted as the King Charles Spaniel. The King Charles Spaniel is not the same as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel; these are two distinctly separate breeds. Queen Elizabeth also has loved these dainty toy dogs. The English Toy Spaniel has been referred to by numerous royal physicians as the great comforter because of the love and devotion they give their royal masters. King Charles II and Queen Elizabeth both are believed to have called the English Toy Spaniel their greatest joy and comfort after dealing with the stresses of running a country.
