Introduction
If you thought to choose a dog from your local adoption shelter was a challenge, then try coming up with a name that no other dog will have. You may feel tempted to choose regular dog names that everyone else has, like Spot, but why not think outside the square?
Think of letter combinations that aren’t all that common, such as dog names that start with Oh, for example. Not only is it unique in the dog naming world, but even in the world of naming children. You may be onto a winner when you start looking for dog names that start with Oh. Read on to find out what’s available.
Dog Names that Start with Oh in Pop Culture
Dog names that start with Oh are rare. The combination of this vowel and consonant is not a common one, and you may find it a challenge to explain it to people who ask. If, however, you were to discover a dog in pop culture that shared the name, you can have a second story to tell people. “I named my dog after x in that classic movie.” How easy does that sound?
It can be far easier to explain that to people, then saying you liked the unique grouping of the vowel and consonant. If you need an example to help you, then consider Ohly the Bernese Mountain Dog. In 2012, Ohly hit national headlines after becoming lost in the harsh terrain and rugged slopes of Mount Seymour. Ohly spent 13 days out in the wilderness, with fear and challenging conditions keeping him from coming back home.
Stephen Goad, Ohly’s owner, said that Ohly escaped from a family friend who was walking him with other dogs at the Mount Seymour ski resort parking lot. Ohly was on a leash but ran back down the road as if he was trying to get home to his owner. When the friend ran after Ohly, he hitched a ride with a stranger, only to watch as Ohly ran into the woods. It then seemed an impossibility that Ohly would ever come back.
Ohly’s owner, friends, and family all dedicated their time to the search effort. They set up a Facebook site to find out if anyone had seen him, and the public response went crazy. It seemed everyone was out searching for the scared and lost Bernese Mountain Dog. People spotted Ohly near the Indian Arm Drive in Deep Cove, but he kept running away from potential helpers. Volunteers spent hours and days searching the trails, even cooking bacon to lure him out with the scent. Unfortunately, the search effort ended up driving Ohly into Suicide Gully, almost unreachable by untrained searchers.
With the risk of someone dying or becoming injured, North Shore Search and Rescue joined the search. The search and rescue effort for Ohly was becoming a public safety concern. The search and rescue team managed to track and locate Ohly alive and safe with their helicopter, racking up a $9,000 bill in the process.
While North Shore Search and Rescue footed the costs, the general public raised enough funds to pay them back. The Goad family could not thank all the helpers and the rescue teams enough for rescuing their beloved family pet Ohly. While he was hungry and scared, he was otherwise well and back with his family after a vet check.
Dog Name that Starts with Oh Considerations
Once you decide you want a dog name that begins with Oh, you then have to start your homework. It’s not enough to find a name you like, then give it to your dog. What if you choose the wrong one? What if it doesn’t suit their gender, breed, color, or personality traits? That’s the risk you take when you don’t do your research.
Gender would have to be one of the most crucial things to consider. Imagine giving your dog what you thought was a unisex name, only to find it’s for a male dog, not your female. You then have to explain your confusion to everyone who asks. The same goes for breed and color. What if the dog name that starts with Oh doesn’t suit them? For example, let’s say you chose a name that means Golden Labrador, but you have a Black Labrador. That revelation will bug you for many years.
Then, you may come across dog names that start with Oh with particular meanings. If those meanings don’t match your new dog’s personality, you’ll forever wonder why you didn’t set more time aside during the research process. Naming your dog can be as important as naming your children. You can’t mess it up! Look for dog names that start with Oh while being responsible.
