Dog Names that Start with Of

As most people know, welcoming a new dog into their family is a momentous occasion. Along with finding out everything to know about your new dog, you then have to come up with a name. But what happens if someone wants to know how your pooch came to get their name? It’s helpful if the name is also of a dog in pop culture, from a TV show, film, important part of history, or in the media. Ofi Tohbi Ishto, or Ofi for short, could be one such dog.

If you call your dog Ofi, you have a beautiful story to offer those who ask, relating to the migration story of the Chickasaw nation. Hundreds of years ago in the West, a tribe was trying to live peacefully. Every time they tried, other tribes would try to fight them, leading to mass death and destruction. Finally, they had enough. The tribe appealed to their wise prophets, Hopayi, to find a solution. The prophets deliberated around a fire, seeking guidance from Aba’Binni’li, their creator. They believed Aba’Binni’li created their destiny.

He said they should seek a new home where they could find the peace they sought. They would take a pole with them called Itti Fabassa Holitto’pa, made by Aba’Binni’li. After each day of travel, they should stick the pole in the ground straight up and down. In the morning, the pole would lean in the direction their trip should take them.

Before the journey, two brave brothers decided to split the group into two for safety. Chahta would take one group, and Chiksa would lead the other.  They would both head in the same direction, with a large white dog, Ofi Tohbi Ishto, leading the way.Ofi  was always on the alert, darting left and right to alert the groups to potential danger. Everyone loved Ofi, and he was their faithful scout and guard at every part of their journey. Ofi also had healing powers. If someone had a snake bite, he could lick the wound and heal it immediately.

Once they reached a great river, called Misha Sipokoni and now known as the Mississippi, they had to struggle to cross it. Unfortunately, the raft carrying Ofi broke, and he floated downstream on wood, where the group would never see him again.

The group eventually split into two, with Chiksa taking his people to keep traveling east, and Chahta to stay put near the Mississipi. From then on, Chahta’s people were Choctaws, and Chiksa’s by the Mississippi were the Chickasaw people.
