Service canine with Dogs For Better Lives, Ian is an Autism Assistance Dog. Located in Central Rock, Oregon, Dogs For Better Lives (formally Dogs For The Deaf) put Ian into the life of Parker, a young boy with autism in February 2016. Ian was called a beta dog for the Autism Assistance Dog program, and the testing of this partnership is a success. Parker is drawn to dogs his mother says, and she was very happy to be given the chance to see what Ian could do.

Established within the family now, the consensus is that Ian brings to Parker a sense of calm and helps him to feel protected. These dogs are trained to do just that; they are taught by professionals to not only provide companionship but instill calm, help to quiet a child at the time of an outburst, apply pressure in that they induce stillness and peace, and more. Ian is a Yellow Labrador Retriever who became the first Dog For The Deaf ever to be trained as an Autism Assistance Dog and his manner and way of working have been described as amazing.

Another dog to provide invaluable service to humans is Jake. Jake is a name which is a variation of a name which in the Hebrew, Romanian, Latin, and Greek languages translates to Jacob or Iacob.  Jake was an American Black Labrador Retriever who was abandoned by his original owner, found and adopted by a woman who worked for the Federal Search and Rescue Team in Salt Lake City, Utah and trained and later certified in search and rescue.  He became certified as a SAR dog and was able to mobilize and respond to a multitude of disasters within 24 hours of their occurrence.  He worked the 911 Ground Zero detail for 17 days following the bombings, worked to locate and rescue victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita as well as many, many more horrific incidents involving human lives lost and injured.  

Jake contracted hemangiosarcoma, a blood born cancer, believed to be the result of the lengthy time he worked at the ground zero site of the 911 terrorist bombings.  He was put to sleep at the age of 12 years after spending the majority of his life helping and saving people who otherwise would likely have perished before being located and rescued without his intelligence, training, and talents.  He is one of many search and rescue dogs remembered for their sacrifices for people they never knew or had the chance to love.
