Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Fe' in Pop Culture
Our human history would not be complete if it did not contain references to our long-standing relationships with dogs. The relationships with our canine companions can be traced back several centuries, found in ancient wall etchings, paintings, drawings, pottery, and statues. Stories told and preserved in writing, found in ancient scrolls, books and the pictographs found on the walls of ancient human habitations provide an abundance of evidence to substantiate this relational aspect of our lives. Canines wagged their way into every aspect of our lives, beginning with duties as family protectors and guards, herding and hunting jobs to help feed the family and earn a living and as caring companions as we grew up, continuing into adulthood for many of us.
Our pop culture dog for today is Febe, a male K-9 airman who represents yet another area in which the canine species proved their worth to the human species, that of military and wartime service. Febe joined the ranks of the United States military in the early 2000’s and was trained to be an explosive detection patrol dog. During his tenure, he served beside several airmen of the 37th Security Forces Squadron, awarded an Army Commendation Medal and Iraq Freedom Medal with one of them. Every airman with whom Febe served, testify to Febe’s superior explosive-sniffing nose, calling it a “phenomenal nose” providing concrete support of his record of saving not only the lives of those airman handlers but also many others. He was called a “push button dog,” allowing his superiors to assign him to newer recruits because he knew his job so well. He just reacted as expected every time he was on task.
Febe’s talents didn’t stop when the mission ended. He had a knack lightening your day and making you smile when your day went afoul. Described as comical and clumsy, he was just a dog when he wasn’t wearing his “military” hat. Febe retired in 2015 adopted by one of the airmen who had served with him for over three years. Febe passed away in 2017, but he will never be forgotten. His last day was spent with family, friends, airmen and law enforcement, with his last call broadcast through the patrol vehicles of the security forces. Security forces and airmen lined the street, honoring one of their own and saying their final good-bye.
