Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Fa' in Pop Culture
Names that start with "Fa" for your dog are somewhat rare, but even so, there are some heavy hitters in pop culture. Almost every 80s kid will remember the fabled tale, "The Never Ending Story" with its adventures, sorrows, and triumphs. One of the most memorable characters in it was Falkor, the Luck Dragon. Falkor is not even close to being a dog. In fact, this character is of mythical proportions and is considered a dragon. However, one glance at Falkor and you can't help but see his dog-like appearance, albeit, on a large scale. Falkor certainly looks like a Spaniel of some kind.
Another famous dog in pop culture which bears a name beginning with "Fa" is Farfel, the Nestle Quik dog. Farfel was the creation of Jimmy Nelson, a master ventriloquist. Farfel's Nestle Quik advertisements ran from 1955 to 1965, and the famous dummy dog is still well-remembered as the original spokesman or spokes-animal of Nestle Quik.
One of the most noted pop culture icon dogs, who even inspired a foundation, is Farley the Old English Sheepdog from the comic strip For Better or For Worse. The comic strip ran in real time from 1979 to 2008 and centered on the lives of the Patterson family. The Pattersons kept an Old English Sheepdog named Farley who at age 14, bravely rescued April, one the family members, from a rapidly flowing river. Unfortunately, the episode led Farley to have a heart attack, and the family's dog died. Though Farley was a fictional comic strip dog, his death provoked a lot of emotion and public outcry. Lynn Johnston, the creator and cartoonist for For Better or For Worse, received more than 2,500 letters regarding Farley's death and about two-thirds of them were negative. When Johnston told her long-time friend Charles Schultz, creator and cartoonist of Peanuts, her intention to "kill-off" Farley, Schultz threatened to have Snoopy hit by a truck. Of course, that did not happen.
Since his death, Farley inspired an Ontario non-profit foundation called the Farley Foundation. The foundation uses Farley's likeness and has helped keep this pop culture icon alive. The foundation was created by the Ontario Veterinary Medical Association to help subsidize costly pet healthcare so that low-income families can continue to enjoy the relationship of love of pet ownership. Lynn Johnston generously loaned Farley to the foundation to help raise awareness and connect Canadians with the iconic dog they fell in love with in the comic strip.
