Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'Eg' in Pop Culture
Tracing canine contributions to our lives through centuries past, hunting, protecting, herding, racing and adding unconditional love and loyalty demonstrated in our lives abundantly world-wide and virtually all cultures. Throughout the centuries of relationship development, the canine personality has morphed into something unique and exciting, while relatively co-dependent in their relationships with their human families; they possess the ability to mirror traits of their human counterparts, even having the ability to develop some “attitudes” of their own.
It is this latter ability which defines our pop culture spotlight for today, Egon Finney. Sit back, and well tell you a true story about Egon Finney, Rin Tin Tin, F. Scott Fitzgerald and water skiing from 1928. Egon Finney was a German Shepherd Dog who was owned by Ben Finney, a friend of F. Scott Fitzgerald, a prominent writer. Ben Finney was an American, wealthy, a frequent visitor to the Riviera from 1925 to 1930, a silent movie actor, soldier, and friend to F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway, who was put into an unusual position regarding his beloved and cherished best friend, Egon. Since dogs mature more rapidly than their human counterparts when it became necessary to retire Rin Tin Tin, the star of the TV series of the same name, Hollywood approached Ben Finney with an offer to hire Egon to replace the original Rin Tin Tin. Ben refused, citing as the reason the closeness of their relationship prohibiting their separation.
The pair romped playfully on the Riviera, with Egon seen displaying his “diving” talents and even occasionally utilizing Ben’s surfboard - a rare sight on the Riviera in the late 1920’s! Fitzgerald was responsible for teaching Egon to ride a surfboard alone! Yes, believe it or not, Egon would ride along on the board behind the boat as long Ben was visible in the boat ahead. While his canine body configuration made mounting the board awkward, Fitgerald would help get him onto the board, then stand back and away Egon would go balancing himself with fur and tail flying in the wind. He looked so noble as he rode alone on that board, and his facial expression and demeanor let everyone know that he knew it! When he fell off, and this he sometimes did, he would have a look that spoke that anyone could fall off once in a while and he’d beg for another try.
