Dog Names that Start with Da

There are many examples of names that start with"d" and "a" in popular culture throughout history. We see an early example of a "Da" name in history in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel that was gifted to the Duchess of Kent in 1833. The little dog was dubbed Dash, and he soon became the constant companion to the thirteen-year-old daughter of the Duchess, Princess Victoria. The two were so closely bonded that when Princess Victoria went sailing on a yacht, the dog dove into the ocean to join her, and the first thing that Victoria did after her coronation as Queen in 1837, was give Dash a bath. In the 1880s and 1890s Caroline Harrison, the wife of 23^rd President Benjamin Harrison, also had a dog named Dash, a Collie-mix who accompanied them to the White House, where President Harrison had a dog house built for him.

More recently, a Pit Bull-type dog named Dakota was rescued from a dog fighting ring at just six weeks old by dog trainer Kris Crawford. Under Kris’s tutelage, Dakota quickly became one of the top-rated search-and-rescue dogs in the United States, working on several high profile cases, including the search to recover debris after the explosion of the Space Shuttle Columbia in 2003. Cesar Milan worked closely with an American Pit Bull Terrier with an exceptionally calm and compassionate nature named Daddy from 1994 until he passed away in 2010. Daddy was well-loved by the public for his tolerant and loving attitude which helped to engender a more positive image of Pit Bull-type dogs everywhere.

A black Lab mix by the name of Dagger was featured in several news stories in 2015 and 2016 due to his unconventional profession. Dagger, also known by his nickname DogVinci, had originally been slated as an assistance animal, but fear issues halted that career opportunity and he found a home in Long Island with an artist by the name of Yvonne Dagger. He sat and watched as she worked, occasionally nudging Yvonne with his nose when she asked one day if he wanted to paint, he wagged his tail in response. Using a brush designed with a handle a dog can grasp in its mouth, Dagger has been painting ever since that day, creating works of art that have sold all over the world, and donating the funds to Canine Companions for Independence. He has been featured on the Rachel Ray Show, the Today Show, and Inside Edition, has had a documentary produced about him, and he is a certified therapy dog, frequently visiting nursing homes, schools, and libraries. Now that’s a modern-day renaissance dog.
