Introduction
Dog Names that Start with 'At' in Pop Culture
Our pop culture spotlight today is Atlas, the "face" of The Battle Buddy Foundation. Atlas, also known as "the wonder dog," is a service dog owned by a soldier who suffered a traumatic brain injury after getting tangled up with a roadside bomb in Iraq. The soldier describes himself as being totally lost and locked up tight in a prison that is personal and real. While the soldier reports that he did begin getting treatment for his PTSD while still on active duty, talk therapy sessions and a single prescription drug that did little to help him. More than a decade later, he reports that he was using more than eight prescription drugs which involved taking over 33 pills every day, his life feeling "very sad, hazy and hopeless."
Then, Atlas came into his life! He describes Atlas as not just a mere service dog, but instead his lifesaver, in many more ways than we who don't suffer from this condition can imagine. Atlas was trained to sense the emotional changes that take place in humans when those horrible wartime flashbacks present themselves. For this soldier, this training took on a grounding and solid presence when Atlas, sensing the changes in his master, would nudge his hand, or awaken him from the throes of a nightmare or stand behind him to let him know that "he had my back." The soldier makes no bones about the fact that it is Atlas' influence in his life which has allowed him to be an active and positive person in the lives of his children. He feels like dogs like Atlas are a beacon of hope for those who think there is no hope, letting them know that there is a way to find yourself and that the pain and fears are not valueless.
