Ajax was valued at about $3,000 as he was a highly trained dog. It was also a requirement that he go to a handler who had experience with police dogs. The city also stated that it didn't have enough staff to train another K-9 officer so Ajax's retirement was also questionable.

Hickey was devastated as he and Ajax had formed a strong bond after working together for so long. Hickey said he had the money and the training required to adopt Ajax but the city laws were standing in the way. Then, the support of the online community came to his rescue. Hickey announced his retirement online and then the community heard that he was fighting to keep Ajax. A GoFundMe account was set up and more than $70,000 was raised to help Hickey obtain Ajax. The city certainly took notice then!

Luckily, a loop hole was found in the law and Hickey was able to purchase Ajax from the city for $1! A law was found that said if a canine unit is disbanded, the canine may be purchased by the law enforcement officer who was assigned to them. Since Hickey was retiring, the "unit" was being disbanded, entitling him to purchase Ajax. Hickey was elated and now lives at home with Ajax. The money from the GoFundMe was donated to a group called Vested Interest which provides bullet proof vests for dogs.
