Introduction
Pleasant Dog Names in Pop Culture
Odie has been an integral part of the Garfield comic strip and following animated series. Odie's first comic strip appearance took place on August 8, 1978. He has also starred alongside the quintessential kitty Garfield in the television series Garfield and Friends, as well as the animated series The Garfield Show. He has also appeared in the following movies with his feline counterpart: Garfield: The Movie, Here Comes Garfield, and many animated shorts.
Odie is a house dog, and he rarely uses thought balloons as do the other characters in the comic strip. However, Odie has used the phrases, "I'm hungry" and "Hi, to the people." Often, Odie generally uses short phrases such as "Ta-da!", "Huh?", and "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" which comes across as more of a panting noise than actual words. Odie is also distinctive in that when he speaks, he actually moves his mouth.
Odie was originally named "Spot," but Garfield creator Jim Davis had previously used the name "Odie" in a car dealership commercial he had written in the 1970s, and, when he created the comic strip series, Davis created a pleasant dog for whom the name Odie was just right.
Interestingly enough, Odie was not originally Jon Arbuckle's dog. Odie originally belonged to a roommate of Jon's. The character was eventually written out of the series, and there is no definitive explanation for this.
While Garfield often pokes fun at Odie's intelligence, or lack thereof, Odie often turns the tables on Garfield and proves just how smart the pup really is. Odie has been spotted reading Tolstoy's War and Peace. He also managed to crawl into a car and lock himself in the car while locking the other characters out in a thunderstorm. Odie can even write - utilizing his mouth to do so. In fact, Odie's lengthy tongue is a comic part of the series. Garfield has used Odie's tongue as a paintbrush, and Odie is often portrayed with his tongue wrapping around furniture and other objects. This just adds to his great humor.
Odie is a happy and patient dog. He never mistreats Garfield although the stereotypical natural order is for dogs to antagonize cats. They truly are the best of friends.
