Odie has been an integral part of the Garfield comic strip and following animated series. Odie's first comic strip appearance took place on August 8, 1978. He has also starred alongside the quintessential kitty Garfield in the television series Garfield and Friends, as well as the animated series The Garfield Show. He has also appeared in the following movies with his feline counterpart: Garfield: The Movie, Here Comes Garfield, and many animated shorts.

Odie is a house dog, and he rarely uses thought balloons as do the other characters in the comic strip. However, Odie has used the phrases, "I'm hungry" and "Hi, to the people." Often, Odie generally uses short phrases such as "Ta-da!", "Huh?", and "Yeah, yeah, yeah!" which comes across as more of a panting noise than actual words.
