Introduction
Dog Names Meaning Lovely in Pop Culture
For the longest time now, dogs have been a staple in notable pop culture works and references. Whether it is in art, literature, entertainment or even in the latest trends, dogs are prevalent and often featured. A lot of these dog characters are portrayed as exquisite creatures with pleasing personalities. In addition, a lot of them are even given lovely names to match. A good example of this is Belle, from the 1965 classic novel Belle et Sebastien.
Written by author Cecile Aubry, Belle et Sebastien tells the story of the two titular characters – a Great Pyrenees named Belle and a six-year-old orphan named Sebastien. The story is set in the French Alps, where Sebastien is residing with his grandfather, brother and sister. They were taken in by their adoptive grandfather after their mother passed away while giving birth to him.
The plot of the novel revolves around the mysterious “Beast” that is said to be plaguing the inhabitants and flocks of sheep in Sebastien’s community, including his grandfather’s. The town where he lives in also secretly allows Jews to enter through Switzerland. In Sebastien’s mind, his mother will be coming back for him and that she has just migrated to “America” on the other side of the mountains, which is why he spends most of his time in there.
As he was coming back from his regular trip to the mountain, he encounters the “Beast” that everyone is talking about. Upon meeting her, Sebastien becomes completely enamored by the livestock guard dog. Because of her striking appearance, he names the dog “Belle”, which means “lovely one” in French. He helps clean up all the mud off Belle and instantly become friends with her. However, for Belle’s safety, Sebastien decides to keep their friendship a secret.
Their friendship was the start of something great, but it is not without challenges. With lots of German soldiers out to get Belle and those helping the Jews, Sebastien desperately tries to get help. Luckily, lots of people from their community were there to assist. At the end of the story, Belle and Sebastien set off together and start anew.
The novel is considered as a timeless piece of work and has been adopted into numerous works worldwide, including films, television series and even a Japanese anime. The most successful adaptation was the 2013 film entitled Belle and Sebastian. Due to the film’s success, a sequel was produced and released in 2014, entitled Belle & Sebastian: The Adventure Continues.
Dog Names Meaning Lovely Considerations
If you just recently acquired a new puppy, then you would have to be prepared to take on the many responsibilities that come with owning one. Think of it as having a baby, only in dog form! Among the first few duties that you will take on as a “furparent” is to choose a name for your dog. Normally, dog experts and trainers would recommend picking a short name for the dog, composed of just one to two syllables to be exact. Their justification for this is that dogs are prone to only recall the first two syllables of a word. Hence, a longer name might not be picked up by dogs right away. Another pro tip is to choose a name that does not sound like the usual dog commands. For example, the name “Ray” sounds dangerously close to the command “Stay”, which your dog may find confusing.
If you feel like choosing a name that means “lovely” for your dog, there really is not that much to consider. By definition, the word “lovely” means “exquisitely beautiful”. Thus, you may choose a name that literally means “lovely” or any other words that have similar meaning, such as “beautiful”, “attractive”, “pretty” or “gorgeous”, among others. For male dogs, names meaning “handsome” or “good-looking” are appropriate.
