Her training includes running into buildings with purposefully planted drugs, making sure she can sniff them out and alert her handler to their presence. If she couldn’t, she wouldn’t make it in the police world in the K9 unit. When Joe first got Ixi, she already had full training. Therefore, Joe’s job was to learn how Ixi works and pick up on her signals. He now knows everything about her, including how she reacts when she finds something illegal. Joe says that her discreet alert is not something that many other people would notice.

However, Ixi’s life is not all work and no play. She enjoys a balance of both and loves her job. She enjoys playing with her toys and having a game of fetch with Joe. He also takes her out at least once a day for a game of ball. Ixi loves to bound around and act the goof, even if she’s “all business” during her daily work.

To get Ixi to her level of experience today takes a lot of hard work, training, and energy. Some dogs don’t like loud noises or certain textures on their feet – like slippery lino. Ixi had to go through several tests, such as running through a pile of noisy milk bottles to retrieve a ball. Trainers have to establish that nothing phases a dog – to ensure they don’t spook when on the job. It’s clear to see that Ixi not only has a unique and distinctive name but that she’s a special dog as well.
