Introduction
There is no single reason for wanting to look for dog names ending in "ui". It’s often a personal choice brought about by something in your life. "Ui" is at the end of several names and in many cultures, and can often be more prevalent in one culture than another. For example, in Maori – the native language of New Zealand, "ui" forms the ending of many words and places, including Nui – meaning large, and Whanganui – a town.
No one can tell you that the dog names ending in "ui" that you pick are not correct or suitable as it’s a personal choice. Why not take a look at these options below and see if any stand out as a winner for your new adopted pet?
Dog Names Ending in 'ui' in Pop Culture
Dogs with names ending in "ui" are quite rare, and there are not too many in pop culture either. However, three prominent dogs – one in pop culture and two in heroic roles, stand out from all the others – Maui, Pui, and Zuyaqui.
Maui is a Border Collie mix breed that appeared in the TV show Mad About You, a 1991 American sitcom on NBC. The show won several awards, including 12 Primetime Emmy Awards and four Golden Globe awards. On the favorite seven-season show, Maui played the role of Murray - the Buchman family’s dog that Paul Buchman found as a puppy. Oddly enough, Paul met Jamie while walking Murray.
Maui, or Murray, is quite a character. He often chases an invisible man, crashing into walls to try and get him. Jamie ends up discovering what Murray has been pursuing in later episodes. We won’t spoil it for you, but it’s a standout episode!
Murray is such a character that the TV Guide readers voted him as the most popular dog – all thanks to his laid-back nature, loyalty, endearing qualities and a little bit of dizziness on the side.
Before appearing on Mad About You, Maui appeared in TV commercials and as a back-up on the film Bingo. Boone Narr – a Hollywood animal trainer - trained him after finding him in an animal shelter in Castaic, California. Maui also appeared in the 2005 Canadian American Christmas film Santa’s Slay (a play on words for obvious reasons to follow.) The movie follows the wealthy and dysfunctional Mason family. They all sit down to Christmas dinner before Santa comes down the chimney and kills them in some clever ways.
The movie then helps you to work out how the grizzly scene came to be. Maui plays a small role, but his presence in the film is known, and it led him onto bigger and better things.
Another notable dog, but not necessarily in pop culture, is Zuyaqui. Zuyaqui was a German Shepherd with the Mexican Federal Police. He served loyally and now has his body preserved in a drug-trafficking museum called Museo del Enervante. You can now go in and view Zuyaqui.
Then, there’s Pui, a Thai Bangkaew dog that at just aged two, saved an abandoned baby’s life. Pui found the baby girl inside a plastic bag in Tha Rua district, Ayutthaya, by a roadside dump. He carried the newborn home without hurting her.
Dog Name Ending in 'ui' Considerations
Believe it or not, before you narrow down your list of dog names ending in "ui", you may need to run through a few considerations. The first one is the meaning of the word you are thinking of calling your dog. Does it have a purpose? Is it a name, a place, or a word? Does it hold considerable cultural value to someone? The last thing you want to do is consider dog names ending in "ui" that end up being culturally insensitive.
The next thing to consider is how effortless it is to pronounce. If the name is long, it might not roll off the tongue, and you may run into trouble with training as well. However, intelligent breeds might not have too much trouble.
The color of your dog doesn’t matter so much, but it can depend on the meaning of the word, once again. The size, believe it or not, can be something worth considering. For example, Nui means giant in Maori, so it can either be funny to call your small dog Nui or give your large dog that name. Or, if you want your pooch to grow into their name, you could name them Whakanui which means ‘to expand.’
