Fatso and Nuku were out pig hunting with their owner Peter Te Kahika when chasing a pig had disastrous consequences. The pig changed direction suddenly, sending both dogs hurtling over the cliff. The dogs were barking and alive at the bottom, but Peter was unable to retrieve them. Peter went to see his dogs a few days later to try and retrieve them but had no luck. A friend scaled the cliff and got stuck, with emergency services required to rescue him. Peter visited his dogs every day, making sure they were alive.

After nine days, Wellington’s SPCA crew were able to abseil down the cliff and rescue the two dogs. They thought they were too late as they couldn’t find them, but a howl sent them in the dogs’ direction. Rescuers found them on a ledge of fallen trees. Both dogs were skinny and in poor condition, but were in good spirits. Peter was reunited with his dogs minutes later, promising them a hearty dinner and plenty of attention after their ordeal.
