Dog Names Ending in po

Most people like to be able to offer a back story behind their dog’s name. If you don’t have one, it can make waiting room conversation in your local vet clinic quite stilted. However, with dog names ending in "Po", there’s not a lot of backstory on most occasions. Not unless, of course, you link them to dogs in pop culture that also have dog names ending in "Po". Below, we cover two such dogs: Khyi Yang Po and Hippo.

Khyi Yang Po is the Bearded Collie from the 2006 family comedy The Shaggy Dog. A dog named Cole plays the role of Khyi Yang Po, a shaggy dog that lives in a Tibetan Monastery. Khyi Yang Po isn’t like any dog, however, he’s 300 years old and sacred. Greedy geneticists steal the dog in the hopes of discovering how a dog comes to be three centuries old. The scientists work out that Khyi Yang Po’s DNA, once isolated, invades and alters cells when they are exposed to it (such as in a bite). While they are trying to establish the key to his immortality, the dog escapes and ends up with a woman named Carly.

Carly calls Khyi Yang Po ‘Shaggy’ and he blends in with her home life with her and husband Dave well. However, when Shaggy retrieves the newspaper and bites Dave’s hand, his saliva infects Dave. Dave starts transforming into a dog the same as Po and even takes on dog-like characteristics. He chases cats, fetches sticks, and his family remains unaware. Carly’s family then house Dave like a dog, thinking he’s Shaggy. Dave comes to learn how little he understands his family, which sets him on a path to make it right.

Hippo is another dog with a name ending in "Po". Hippo the dog ended up in a dog shelter covered in tumors, with various health problems, elderly, and near the end of his life. It was clear to shelter staff that this lovable dog had not seen love in some time.

The staff did not think Hippo would enjoy too much excitement, but they wanted to make his final days memorable. As it turns out, Hippo would have a blast. He got to play at the river, make new dog friends at a dog park, and drink a puppucino at Starbucks. Complete strangers showered Hippo in love, showing him that even though he didn’t get a lot of love in his life, it still existed.

Hippo then made his way over the rainbow bridge, having finished off his day with a roast chicken, surrounded by loving shelter volunteers.
