Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'ner' in Pop Culture
Our first featured famous dog is John Joiner, from the children's book titled Roly Poly Pudding. This children's book was written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter and was first published in 1908 under the title of The Tale of Samuel Whiskers and later re-published in 1926 under the title of Roly Poly Pudding. The story involves the writer's treasured fancy rat she calls "Sammy" and Tom Kitten, who escaped from two villainous rats who wish to make him into a pudding. This cute tale was later adapted to an animated version in 1993. It appears that the writer's intention was to infer the childhood sin of disobedience as she weaves a comical, though intriguing, tale which involves John Joiner, Tom Kitten's mother (Tabitha Twitchit), his two sisters (Moppet and Mittens) and Samuel Whiskers and his wife Anna Maria (the rats in question). The tale takes us through a disciplinary measure taken by Tom's mother of locking he and his two sisters in a cupboard to keep them in line, his escape through a circuitous route and rescue by our featured famous dog with a name ending in 'ner', John Joiner. Tom finds himself trapped in the attic floor and his mother must call John Joiner, who is a carpenter, to cut into the floor of the attic to rescue Tom. In the end, the Whiskers family escape to the barn, taking their chaos with them, leaving the Kitten family to live in peace. Tom, however, has not come through this adventure unscathed ... he now is afraid of any rodent larger than a mouse!
Our second featured famous dog with a name ending in 'ner' is Abner, the Invisible Dog. Abner is an English Sheepdog and the beloved pet of Chad Sheppard, a 13-year old boy who is celebrating his birthday. In a last minute effort to come up with a birthday gift for his son, Chad's dad buys him a chemistry set which, unbeknownst to him, is the hiding place for a vial of a secret potion stolen from the government. The thieves, who see the purchase made, follow Chad's dad home. Chad is totally enthralled with his chemistry set ... that is until he sees Abner sniffing and drinking the liquid from the secreted vial. As Chad's worse fears for his beloved canine friend dissolve (because Abner didn't keel over and die), he watches as his pet suddenly takes on an upper class British voice and can disappear! The story goes on with the kidnapping of Chad and Sophie, his romantic interest and the eventual coming to their rescue by Abner, action which are enhanced by his "new" skills.
