Introduction
Are you a new pet parent? Are you aware of the new responsibilities which are now yours? We are referring to things like finding healthy and nutritional food and treats to feed your new furry family member as well as sleeping arrangements, exercise routines, house training, collar and leash training and, of course, choosing the perfect name for your bundle of bounding energy. This last task is often deemed to be the most difficult and, accordingly, left undone as long as possible. The naming of your new pet is essential, and Wag! is here to help make this task more fun.

Our cast of characters: Burden owned a farm in Johnson County Missouri. Old Drum was the favorite of several hunting dogs owned by Burden. Hornsby was the owner of the adjoining farm, who, having already suffered the loss of over a hundred sheep due to the prowling predators, had made a vow that he was going to start shooting stray dogs found on his property. On October 28, a hound wandered onto his property and, faithful to his vow; the hound shots were fired, supposedly with a load of corn to scare it away rather than kill it, this action felt necessary just in case it turned out to be a neighbor's dog.
Well, to make this long but interesting story a little shorter, the dog did turn out to belong to a neighbor, Charles Burden. The "corn" load turned out to be more deadly than Hornsby intended, with the actual loading and shooting done by his nephew. When Charles heard the gunshot and his favorite dog didn't come home even by the next morning, he went in search. After confronting his neighbor and being told they didn't see Old Drum, he continued to search, finding his dog dead near a creek. He filed a civil claim against his neighbor which began in the local justice of the peace, and, the case, having been heard no less than four times, was finally adjudicated on appeal to the Supreme Court of Missouri in Burden's favor, awarding him the maximum of $50 and court fees for the death of his dog. The final hearing at the Supreme Court level was the "punch line" for this story ... not because of the superb legal skills of the now famous Missouri Big Four or because of the abundance of irrefutable evidence in the case but because of the closing argument of Burden's attorney. This argument took the form of a eulogy of a man and his best friend and the relationship which develops. The jury quickly returned with a verdict in Burden's favor, but perhaps the more important aspect was the fact that this Eulogy of the Dog has become famous for all dog lovers as it appeals to our love of the canine species and the role they have played in our lives, down through the centuries.
