Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'ge' in Pop Culture
If there was ever a true hero dog, George the Jack Russell Terrier from New Zealand was that dog. In fact, this brave pooch defended humans to the death because he was so loyal. The tiny terrier gave up his own life to protect five neighborhood children who were attacked by two large dogs. The name George is Greek for farmer, but this George was no farmer. He was a warrior. George was born in 1998 and his owner Allan Gay, knew his dog was special, but he just did not know how special he was.
George was a friendly pup that loved to play with the neighborhood children in his North Island village of Manaia in New Zealand every day. He was well known by all the people in this small community and was loved by everyone who met him. Especially the children. On this day, in 2007, George had followed the children down to the local corner store to buy some candy.
On April 29, 2007, the children and George were walking home from the store when two large American Pit Bull Terriers approached and attacked the children. George immediately jumped into action and fought with the two dogs, keeping them from causing too much injury to the children. The nine-year-old Jack Russell was only a foot tall, but he didn’t care. All he cared about was protecting the kids.
The children said that George did not seem to care if he got hurt and even when he was seriously injured, he continued to fight these dogs to keep them from harming the children. They said he did not attack the dogs but barked at them and ran at them to keep them from hurting the kids. Although the children were spared, the tiny terrier, George, was not. He was so severely injured that he had to be euthanized.
George the Jack Russell Terrier was awarded a Purple Heart for his bravery. Not from the military but from Vietnam War veteran Jerrell Hudman, who gave him one of the three that he was awarded during his service. In addition, the New Zealand Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) awarded George a medal of bravery, and in 2009, he was posthumously awarded a PDSA gold medal from the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals. A bronze statue of George was also built in his honor in Manaia, Taranaki, New Zealand so he will never be forgotten.
