Dog Names Ending in be

Gabe, a Labrador Retriever, was a military dog with the United States Army as an explosive-detecting dog for many years and saved countless lives. He started his pawesome military career when he was saved from a kill shelter in Houston in 2006 by a Labrador Retriever rescue organization. At three years old, the couple who adopted him realized that Gabe was destined to be more than just a family pet. He was drafted into the Army and loved it. 

Gabe was teamed up with Army Sergeant First Class Charles Shuck, or Chuck Shuck, who was working at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas at the time. The two trained together for five months before Gabe passed the Specialized Search Dog exam with flying colors and joined his partner, Chuck, in Iraq in 2007. Chuck and Gabe were called to the front lines in Iraq many times to search villages, roadsides, homes, and other areas armed only with his nose and a harness. 

Chuck said that Gabe was able to smell explosives and other dangerous materials up to a quarter of a mile away. With his amazing senses, Gabe was able to detect dangerous materials in many situations during their 13 months in Iraq as well as Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; Fort Bliss, Texas; and Fort Lewis, Washington. The two completed more than 200 combat missions and 26 explosive finds that saved many lives. 

But Gabe was not just a soldier; he was also a healer and an educator as well. While in the combat zones, he helped other soldiers and victims who were feeling low or depressed, missing home or their loved ones. He did this just by giving them comfort. Being there and letting them pet him and cuddle with him meant a lot to so many while he was “off duty.” In fact, he was a regular at the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Tent in Iraq as well as combat hospitals and first aid tents. 

When Chuck was reassigned to teach instructors in Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina, the Army teamed Gabe up with another handler, but Gabe wasn’t having it. He refused to work with anyone but Chuck, so he was officially retired in 2009 and was adopted by Chuck, and taken home to live with his sister, Lena and brother Duke, who are both rescue dogs as well. 

In 2012, Gabe was awarded Hero Dog by the American Humane Society and won $15,000 for his charity, United States War Dog Association, which is a nonprofit organization that provides care packages to overseas service members and their canine companions. And since Gabe is Hebrew for hero, his name fits him furfectly.
