Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'as' in Pop Culture
Everyone has likely heard of Alexander the Great. He was an ancient ruler of Macedonia and one of the greatest military men in history. As King of Macedonia and Persia, he had the largest empire that era had ever seen and although he died at only 32 years old, he changed history more than any other human. He was born in Macedonia in 356 BC to King Philip and Queen Olympias, but some say his father was Zeus, the ruler of the Greek Gods.
But there is someone who spent every minute with Alexander at home and at war that never gets much credit. His name was Peritas, and he was a Molossian dog who helped Alexander in all his battles. However, others say that Peritas was a Greyhound while others claim he was a Bulldog. Whatever breed Peritas was, he was a fighting dog, and Alexander’s uncle Alexander the Molossian, King of Epirus, gave him the dog.
The stories claim that the brave pooch had been attacked by an elephant as well as a lion and beat both of them. Another story of how he got the dog was that he was donated to Alexander from the King of Albania, who showed him how the pooch could take down an elephant on his own. Although these stories have not been proven, it is a fact that Peritas fought alongside his master, Alexander the Great in many battles while he conquered time and time again.
During their time together, Alexander the Great and Peritas became history’s most notable leaders, and their conquests laid the foundation for modern civilization. Alexander was said to have brought together the continents of Asia and Europe, and he reportedly got the nickname by being one of the most impressive fighters who incensed his men to such loyalty that they would die for him without a second thought.
Many who knew of Alexander and Peritas say that Alexander the Great may have been just Alexander the Average if he had not had Peritas by his side. In fact, when he was being overwhelmed by Persia’s army, the dog attacked the elephant that the opposing soldiers were using to attack Alexander and his men.
According to historians, the name Peritas is the Macedonian word for January, but it is not clear whether this held some sort of significance for Alexander’s naming of the dog. What is clear is that Alexander the Great loved his pooch more than anything else and even had a city named in his honor and a monument to him in the central square, so he did get some credit after all.
Dog Name Ending in 'as' Considerations
After bringing home your newest furry family member, this is the time when both you and your pup are getting acclimated to each other, and there is a bit of an adjustment process. One thing to do when you get them home is to make them more comfortable by giving them their own place to sleep, some toys, and some yummy kibble and treats. Then it is time to get down on the floor and play with them. This is the fun part for both of you, but you can also use it as a time to observe your poochie and see if you notice any cute habits or quirks to inspire a good title for your doggo.
You don’t want to just pick the first name that comes to mind like Spot or Fido. You should use some creativity and personal expression to choose your pup’s new moniker. Make sure you like saying it and hearing it because you will likely be saying it over and over again for the next decade or so. According to animal behaviorists, dogs like short and choppy names rather than long ones and will respond better to them. And, avoid names that sound like commands such as stay or sit because that can be confusing.
