Do you like to golf? One thing that you need when golfing is to be able to see the ball, right? Well, not if you are Robert Whitey Adams! When he lost his sight, his furry friend Hap helped him keep up with his favorite sport. Whitey’s favorite pastime has always been golfing, and he said he knows a golf ball like the back of his hand. But when he was having trouble seeing where he hit the ball, he went to the eye doctor, and they said he needed more than just glasses.
The doctor told Whitey that he had retinitis pigmentosa, which is a rare genetic disorder that breaks down the cells in the retina. The retina is the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that contains the photoreceptors that help you see. The retina is made up of genes that carry the cell information needed to make the proteins that help you see. They are required in order to absorb and convert the light into electrical signals that go to the optic nerve in the brain.
Although Whitey was still in the early stages of retinitis pigmentosa, eventually it would cause night blindness and a progressive and permanent loss of sight. The area of his eye that could see was getting smaller every day, and so was his hope of playing his favorite sport. He had to give up driving as well. Luckily, Whitey’s favorite golf hangout is only 500 yards from his home so he typically walked there every day to drive some balls. But even walking was getting difficult as his vision faded.
Whitey had been running a pro golf shop and giving golf lessons for years since he retired from the Army, but he had to give that up too. He was also a UPS driver, but after hitting a few mailboxes, he had to give that up as well. Whitey is not just your average golfer either. He has been attending the Masters Golf Tournament since 1956 and is even friends with Jack Nicklaus.
But once Whitey was blind, he was afraid he would have to quit golfing altogether. However, he found Hap the black Labrador Retriever who is a graduate of the Southeastern Guide Dogs Academy. With Hap’s help, Whitey is able to do as much as he used to although he still cannot see the ball as well as he should and Hap cannot help him hit it in the right spot. But he can help him find it.
Dog Name Ending in ap Considerations
One of the first jobs on your doggy to-do list is to make sure your pup is comfortable as they get acclimated. Get them their own bed, some tasty kibble and treats, and some toys to keep them busy. The next thing on your agenda is to find the perfect name for your new furry family member. Sit down and play with your new furever friend and you may be able to spot a cute habit or quirk that makes your pooch stand out from the others. For example, if your dogster is a clown, how about the name Madcap? And Kneecap is a fun name for the dog who is always following you around. Thunderclap is great for a loud dog and Mishap is cute for the mischievous dog.
Choosing a moniker from your pup’s appearance is also a good choice. For example, Whitecap is great for a white dog, Heap or Giddyap are adorable names for a big doggo, Lap for a petite pup, and Flap for a pooch with long, floppy ears. And what if your dog is so hyper and annoying that they make you want to drink? Name that super fun fur baby Nightcap. Whichever name you choose, make certain you like it because you will be using it a lot over the next decade or so.
