Dog Names Ending in ad

Many dogs have been used in the military for all sorts of jobs, from communication to scouting, detecting to tracking. Even the ancient Egyptians used dogs in the military. It was a common sight in the military, including the Molossus dog and Lydian dogs in 600 BC, which were used as fighting dogs to attack and kill invaders. However, some dogs just come along as a stowaway and become heroes later on down the line. That is the story of Sinbad, the mixed breed dog that was one of only two animals to be classified as officers by the United States military. The other one was Sergeant Stubby, a Terrier who became Sergeant in the 102nd Infantry Regiment, 26th Division during WWI after serving 18 months on the front lines. 

Sinbad was assigned the title of Chief Dog, or K9C, which is the equivalent of a Chief Petty Officer, in 1937. However, when he first came on board, he was smuggled in by his human friend, Chief Boatswain’s Mate A.A. Blackie Rother of the USCGC George W. Campbell. Blackie had intended to give the pup to his girlfriend as a gift, but her apartment did not accept pets, so Sinbad was brought in under wraps and was kept quiet all that night. However, the next morning he started barking and the sailors who saw him decided he would make a great mascot. 

Of course, Sinbad did not just want to be a mascot. He wanted to be one of the crew, so the captain actually enlisted him by letting him “sign” his enlistment papers with his paw print. He even got his own service record, Red Cross and service IDs, his own bunk, and uniforms tailored to fit him. Sinbad ended up serving 11 years during both peace and war times, and during WWII, the ship was awarded for battling six enemy submarines successfully. 

Sinbad actually saw a lot of combat during his 11 years and was considered a valuable member of the crew. However, during the gunfire, you could usually find Sinbad hiding in his bunk with his paws over his ears trying to block out the noise. But he was brave and would hang out with the men at all hours of the night, partying and having fun. And he even got six campaign ribbons and five battle stars during his 11 years of service. This Coast Guard pooch was a salty sailor with a reputation with the ladies and has even gotten put in the brig for fraternizing with the local dogs. But Sinbad got an honorable discharge in 1948 and spent the rest of his years at the coast guard station in New Jersey.
