Introduction
Dog Names Ending in 'ab' in Pop Culture
It is shown in the story that Ailie has been diagnosed with cancer and does not have long to live. In an attempt to further her chances, surgery is taken into consideration. While readers hope for a positive outcome, the surgery does not help, and Ailie passes away. Of course, this is devastating and like many spouses who may be left behind, James' health deteriorates as well. Not long after his wife passing, James too dies. All that is left behind is Rab, the loyal and ferocious Mastiff, and James' horse. Out of complete devotion to James, Rab won't let anyone come near him or the horse, and because of this, the new owners of James' property must put Rab down due to his aggression and fierce loyalty. The story of "Rab and His Friends" ends with the loyal dog's funeral.
Although the story is quite sad, it does do an excellent job of highlighting just how strong a bond can be created between humans and dogs. Rab was a grumpy old dog, but he loved his owners and was extremely loyal to the land that he lived on. There may be more behind the story that the author intended for us to take away from this short story, however, there is no doubt that the inspiring loyalty of Rab is at the forefront. If you too have a Mastiff in your life who is loyal, then perhaps the name of Rab would be perfect to consider; not only does it fit the breed, but it also represents a very popular story well.
