Introduction
Deus Ex, the action role-playing game from 2000, has developed a massive following over the years. The series has expanded, spanning the years of 2027 to 2072 now, and it's known as being one of the few cyberpunk games to really climb the charts. In fact, all of the games have gotten a score of 80 or above, with the exception of Deus Ex: The Fall. Not too shabby for a game that saw its inception almost two decades ago! So, if you're looking to name your dog after an established, popular video game franchise, this may be it. Good taste!
Deus Ex Names In Pop Culture
Kubric was Adam Jensen (protagonist) and Megan Reed's dog. Jensen was a mechanically augmented Chief of Security for the biotechnology company known as Sarif Industries. Reed was the head of neuro-scientific research on augmentations at the same company. Clearly, the dog was in for an unorthodox home life.
Although it's never quite explained, Kubrick does resemble a Border Collie, with his black and white coat, and pointed ears. The type of dog who would enjoy playing catch, fetch, or just chewing a bone by the fire. As he grew in size, he had a habit of knocking down vases, something which Megan Reed is heard explaining to Jensen. Unfortunately, it all had an abrupt ending.
Reed had planned a visit to Washington to present her research for work. A Sarif employee and long-time friend, Diane Gonzales, was asked to mind the dog while both Reed and Jensen were away. But then there was a terrorist attack on Sarif headquarters, and Reed was presumably dead. Meanwhile, Jensen was in a coma. Gonzales took Kubrick into her care, but upon seeing that Jensen wasn't waking up, she had the dog put down. She was unable to keep looking after him herself.
The explanation given was that Diane and Megan had been friends for a long, long time. And knowing Kubrick was the only thing left of Megan, well, it was too much for Diane to bear. Always having to see the dog and be reminded. Of course, this caused outrage amongst both animal activists, and animal lovers alike. Regular gamers who took issue with the decision to kill off a perfectly good storyline before it even really got a chance.
The sad part of it all is that even though Jensen and Reed are no longer a couple, and Kubrick has long since been gone, there is an opening scene in System Rift where a photograph of Kubrick is seen on Jensen's dining room table. This is years later, in 2029. Clearly, Kubrick meant a lot to Jensen, as probably did the years of home life and romantic bliss with Reed.
He also meant a lot to gamers, as every year, they tend to remember Kubrick on National Dog Day, August 26. Some even explain that they stopped playing the game because they felt as if they couldn't get over his loss. That they had imagined the game would be all about Jensen with Kubrick right by his side, doing tricks and fighting enemies.
Deus Ex Dog Name Considerations
When naming your dog, what goes through your head? Do you stop to think about the dog's likes and dislikes, or do you simply think about cute names in general? Maybe you don't have the dog yet, because you're either going through a breeder, or you're adopting from the shelter. This may determine if you even have information like the dog's breed, his or her gender and appearance.
If you do have this type of information, you're in luck. You can use it to better select a name for your dog that goes deeper than just what you like or what sounds good out-loud. You can personalize it to meet certain criteria, such as reflecting your dog's goofiness or shyness.
But if you don't have this type of information, don't worry about it! It's not the end of the world, and you're certainly not a terrible future dog owner. You simply don't want your dog to arrive home and still not have a name.
If that's the case, remember you can choose a popular franchise that you love, such as Deus Ex, and use favorite character and location names to come up with something interesting. Once you have the dog, you can always tweak it, or change it as you see fit!
