Dude

Delaware Dogs were named Animal Heroes in awards presented by the Delaware Veterinary Medical Association and PAWS for People Pet-Assisted Visitation Volunteer Services after receiving nominations throughout the state.

Dude, an 8-year-old Belgian Malinois, is one such dog. At the time of the award, Dude, who has been cross-trained in bomb detection, apprehension, tracking and protection, had been partnered with State Trooper Joe Joannides for two years. Both canine and human had had different partners previously; Joannides partner Panna died of stomach cancer. Upon learning about Dude, Joannides chose to give him a try as his partner. The bond between the two happened quickly, and they made multiple arrests, working with Homeland Security. Joannides comments that Dude is a great tracker and while he only has a few more years until he retires (police dogs retire at around 10), Dude will share his home regardless.

Another honored pooch is Onyx, a Black Labrador. Onyx was Daniel Lynam’s eyes (Lynam is blind) for over nine years, until she died of kidney disease. After being paired with Onyx, Lynam, who became legally blind at the age of 40, was able to gain back his independence. She would accompany him shopping and during travel. Lynam noted that over their time together she would adjust to his speed and that if he was far from home and got disoriented, she would lead him home.

Willing, known as Willie and Willie the Wonder Dog, is a Pit Bull who was born with some problems. His left leg was twisted behind him and his right leg was stiff. A vet tech named Stephanie McPeak at the clinic where he was brought by the breeder, offered to take him if a home could not be found. The pooch underwent surgery to remove his left leg and then went home with McPeak to join her family, which included four other dogs. Willing was found to also have a fused spine and rectal incontinence. Regardless of his physical issues, McPeak notes that he has a happy disposition. His first few years of life were spent as a typical pet, with lots of time to lounge on the couch. When McPeak attended a Million Pit Bull March in Washington D.C., she decided that she wanted to help change perceptions of the breed by doing therapy work. She and Willing signed up for PAWS for People, where Willing earned his Canine Good Citizenship certification and they became a reading therapy team. Since walking long distances is challenging for Willing, he rides in a little wagon to attend his engagements. When people ask about him, McPeak is given the chance to educate others about the breed.

A Yellow Labrador named Lacey was a show dog who competed in both agility and obedience trials. While she was good at it, her owner, Julie Miller, found that she did not seem to really enjoy what she was doing. Miller noticed, however, that Lacey was able to be gentle and quiet with her mother, who has neuropathy. While other dogs would jump on her mom, Lacey seemed to intuitively know not to. Lacey embarked on a career as a therapy dog, becoming certified with PAWS for People. Lacey has worked with the reading program and earned certification, with Miller, to be an Emergency Response Therapy Team.
