Introduction
Dark Matter Inspired Dog Names In Pop Culture
During the mid to late 1950s, enclaves of Soviet scientists and engineers were working overtime to beat their American rivals to the punch. Try as they might, they just weren't able to create a vessel that could safely send a man into space and then bring him back. The best the Soviets could do was build Sputnik, the first artificial Earth satellite, and launch it into orbit on October 4, 1957. Despite this monumental achievement, the members of the Soviet space program were still being pressured to send a living being into space before NASA could.
The scientists and engineers of the Soviet space program knew that sending a person into space with their current technology would essentially be suicide. So rather than launch one of their cosmonauts, the Soviets decided to send an animal into space via an upgraded version of Sputnik - Sputnik 2. When it was time to figure out who would man Sputnik 2, the Soviets already had a pilot in mind. They chose Laika for the mission and immediately started prepping her to make "the ultimate sacrifice."
Laika died on November 3rd, 1957 - mere moments after Sputnik 2 reached the Earth's orbit. The Soviet Union adamantly swore that Laika had survived her mission until a slew of Soviet space program officials broke protocol and told the rest of the world the truth about the dog's tragic tale. For what it's worth, Laika's mission paved the way for Yuri Gagarin and helped him make history as the first man in space. The "Monument to the Conquerors of Space" that sits in the heart of Moscow, Russia also prominently features Laika and depicts her sitting patiently inside of Sputnik 2. Laika's story is infamous in the scientific community and serves as a reminder to never let scientific ambition get in the way of ethics and humane treatment of animals.
Dark Matter Inspired Dog Name Considerations
You might also want to consider giving your dog a Dark Matter inspired name as an act of protest against the show's abrupt cancellation. The Syfy network canceled Dark Matter just one week after the show's season three finale. They canceled the show in spite of its strong critical reception and dedicated fan following. To this day, devout Dark Matter fans are fighting to get the show renewed for a fourth season. If you'd like to see the show make a comeback as well, consider giving your dog a Dark Matter inspired name as a way of showing solidarity with the cause.
