Introduction
Dangerous Liaisons Inspired Dog Names in Pop Culture
The Marquis Isabelle de Merteuil, played by Glenn Close, is a cynical and cruel woman, who’s mantra is win or die. The movie starts shortly after one of the Marquis Isabelle de Merteuil’s lovers has decided to leave her to marry the young, virginal Cécile. In her jealous anger, the Marquis begins to scheme against her ex-lover, enlisting the help of her long-time associate and friend Vicomte de Valmont to ruin the innocence and reputation of her ex-lover’s new fiancée. The Marquis is a well-respected widow who has a number of friends and admirers, but very few of her friends really know her motives as she hides them behind a false face.
Isabelle the dog, an animated dog who was introduced as Hisho (a Japanese name that means secretary), in the 2012 installment of the Animal Crossing: New Leaf franchise, also has a good reputation with her neighbors and friends. In Isabelle the dog’s case, however, it is a more deserved reputation as she is a sweet and helpful little canine. Isabelle is known as Shizue in Japan, a nod to her Shih-Tzu breed, and is the secretary and assistant to the town mayor in the Animal Crossing franchise. She has a twin brother on the show, Digby, who looks very similar to his sister but is much darker in color and runs the Happy Home Showcase. Isabelle generally spends most of her time in Town Hall but is often seen in the plaza during events as Town Hall is closed during those times. She also reminds the player to frequently save their game and may be caught sleeping in Town Hall after awhile, signifying that the Dream Suite can be built. In Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Isabelle is the Town Hall employee that is responsible for distributing the Public Facility projects.
She was so popular with players that she has also made appearances in other game worlds. Along with her Animal Crossing plotline, Isabelle has made appearances in the Super Smash Brothers series, first as an assist trophy in Super Smash Brothers for the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS that throws healing fruit, then as a playable character in the game Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. She also makes an appearance in the Mario Kart 8 game, in an Animal Crossing bonus pack, and is present from the start in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and two costumes based on Isabelle are available in the game Super Mario Maker.
