Damascus Dog Names In Pop Culture
Those that live in Damascus state that over the last few years the number of people seen walking dogs in the streets and parks of the city has greatly increased. Jamil Esekria, for example, a 24-year-old graphic design student who resides in Damascus’s Al-Midan neighborhood, has had a Siberian Husky named Bill since the pup was only six weeks old. According to Esekria, Bill “is like a son to me and I worry about him all the time”. Esekria continues, stating, “it would have been almost impossible for my family and I to get through this war on an emotional level if not for Bill”.
Other pet owners agree with the emotional support offered by a pet, particularly during a country struggling with war. Shahd, age 32, stated, “if not for my dog Perla, I would have succumbed to depression”. Bill has brought a lot of joy to Esekria during a very dark time in his country. Esekria explains, “when I come home feeling like the world is falling apart, only seeing Bill run enthusiastically at me makes me smile from the bottom of my heart”, he said. “I cannot imagine the house without him”.
A dog from Damascus gained media attention when traveling with her owner, a 17-year-old Syrian refugee, over 300 miles. Aslan could not bear to leave his dog, a Siberian Husky name Rose, behind when he left to travel to the Greek island of Lesbos. According to Aslan, “I love this dog. I need her.” Aslan packed his belongings, and food for Rose, in a rucksack, while carrying Rose during the journey, sometimes in his arms and sometimes in a carrier. He also had a passport for the pup. Aslan and Rose gained a lot of media attention with a video of the pair shared on the UNHCR Facebook page, where it received over five million views and many comments in response. Some of the comments included offers of assistance; one woman who commented, whose name was Rose Aslan, stated, “I find it serendipitous that the dog has my first name and the boy has my last name-is there any way I can get in touch with the boy? I’d love to help him out!” According to the Facebook post, the decision to bring along a pet is not unusual. UNHCR stated that when refugees flee their homes, many would not even think of leaving their pets behind.
Damascus Dog Name Considerations
When having a hard time deciding on a name for your new canine companion, you can feel a bit frustrated. Perhaps you assumed the right name would come once you met your dog and it didn’t or you have tried out a few ideas and none seem to work for your pup. It is understandable that you want a name that is “just right”. After all, you will be calling your dog by the name that you choose for years to come.
If you are struggling when naming your dog and if you are seeking a name that has meaning to you, one way to find unique ideas is to choose a place that is important to you and take yourself on a virtual tour. Take Damascus, for example. Syria’s capital, Damascus is a large city and cultural center. Fans of poetry can consider naming their pup Mohja, for Mohja Kahf, a poet and author born in Damascus. Those who enjoy classical music can choose the name Kinan, for Kinan Azemh, a clarinet player born in the city.
With a name from Damascus, you will receive regular reminders of the city each time you call for your dog.
