Introduction

Well, Cuphead and his pal Mugman were the stars of their semi-self titled 2017 indie video game hit Cuphead, which could best be described as an interactive homage to the old school Fleischer and Walt Disney cartoons of the 1930s. Cuphead has gone on to garner unanimous praise by critics and consumers alike, with pundits lauding the game's stunning hand drawn animation, impeccable Jazz inspired soundtrack, and tough-but-fair gameplay. Though the game is more than a year old by the time of this writing, its impact on gaming media can very much still be seen - with many gamers comparing big budget games created by multi-billion dollar companies to this passion project that was created by two brothers and their small, but fiercely loyal, team of family and friends.

Bimbo

Despite featuring many anthropomorphized plants, animals, and objects as in-game characters, Cuphead doesn't really feature any canine characters prominently. The closest we get to that is the dog shaped balloons that Beppi the Clown makes during the battle against him. There may actually be good reasons for the absence of such as character, as any 1930's dog-like characters would've undoubtedly been compared to Bimbo - one of Fleischer Studios' most popular characters and a true titan of the 1930's age of animation. Bimbo is right up there with Betty Boop and even Mickey Mouse in terms of his impact on the animation industry, with Studio MDHR even citing the cartoon canine as one of the major inspirations for the game.

Bimbo is quite an interesting character to dissect - in recent years, there's been a debate as to whether or not Bimbo is actually a dog or if he's incredibly stylized cartoon mink (a sort of ferret-like animal.) As far as we were able to tell from our research, Bimbo was initially created as a dog - with Betty Boop having been created to act as his love interest. The fascinating thing about Betty Boop is that she too initially was a dog before her creators made her a full blown human. In our book, Betty's canine appearance and her relationship with Bimbo cements the fact that Bimbo was originally envisioned as a canine. That being said, we respect the opinions of those who feel that Bimbo truly is just a very cartoon-ish looking weasel and hope that we can all agree that - no matter what species he is - Bimbo's impact on the cartoon industry was an undeniably massive one.

Bimbo made his silver screen debut all the way back in 1930; he first appeared in a 7 minute short titled "Hot Dog," which was produced by Fleischer Studios. The cartoon features dog (an early version of Bimbo) as he wreaks havoc on a small town before the authorities catch up to him. The dog is then taken to court, where he's nearly sentenced to serve hard time for his crimes, before he sings a song that either was supposed to indicate that he'd seen the error of his ways or was catchy enough to make everyone forget why they were mad at him in the first place. Since that episode, Bimbo's design and character changed drastically over the years - a major source as to why it's so hard to get a solid bead on Bimbo.

Cuphead Dog Name Considerations

Funnily enough, most of the characters in Cuphead are named after inanimate objects - Cuphead, Mugman, and Elder Kettle are all named after the objects that they physically resemble while characters like Dr. Kahl and Grim Matchstick possess names that are homages to legends of the animation industry. If you've played Cuphead, or have even just watched others play it online or in person, and have found yourself enamored with the 1930s "Golden Age of Animation," you could name your dog after a Cuphead character to pay homage to titans of the cartoon industry. Heck, you could name your dog after a Cuphead character to pay homage to Studio MDHR - the team that spent more than five years working their butts off to bring this ambitious passion project to life!

Many of the characters in the Cuphead universe also very quirky and alliterative names, a la the classic cartoon characters like Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, or Porky Pig. You could very well give your dog an alliterative title to keep that trend alive; if you've got a Labrador Retriever in your care, you could name them Luck Lab (Lazy Lab if they're a big old couch potato.) Dire Doberman, Husky Husky, Super Shepherd - the possibilities are endless!
