Introduction

The Coptic or Coptic Egyptian was the latest stage of the Egyptian language and was used in Egypt until the 17th century as their official language. Although it is not a native language anymore, it is still spoken in the Coptic Catholic and Orthodox churches. The Coptic language is similar to Greek as it used the same type of glyphs used in the Greek alphabet. John

John may seem like a strange name for a dog, but since there have been 21 Popes named John, this doggo’s name fits perfectly. That’s because John the Border Collie has been saving people and performing miracles for years. However, he didn’t start out as a hero. John was a six-week-old Border Collie puppy at Last Chance, an animal shelter in Arkansas and he was saved from the shelter by Donna Waugh who had no clue she was bringing home a hero and a miracle dog.

Because Donna was the president of the Arkansas Search Dog Association, she decided to train John to be a rescue and recovery dog. Within a year that pawesome pooch was making a name for himself and being called to find missing victims in tornados, drownings, disasters, and even kidnappings. In fact, the cunning canine recently helped find hundreds of victims in the Joplin tornado, Nashville flood, and several other water rescues in the area.

As if being a successful search and rescue dog wasn’t enough, Dr. Alexander Burnett asked Donna about possibly using one of her search and rescue dogs to detect the scent of ovarian cancer from a urine sample. This was groundbreaking research that would save countless lives because ovarian cancer is not usually found until it's too far advanced to treat. Donna immediately thought of John because of his amazing scenting abilities.

Soon after, John the Border Collie became the first pooch to be involved in the Ovarian Cancer Detection Study at the University of Arkansas. And the fabulous fur baby proved to be just as good at detecting cancer as he was at finding people. John was able to identify a cancerous urine sample on command. He would sit down and touch it with his paw to let the researchers know which one had the cancer cells.

With this new skill, John was named the American Humane Association’s Hero Dog of the Year in 2013. John and Donna got to go to an award ceremony in Hollywood where they met Betty White and many other celebrities. Donna and John donated their winnings of $5000 to UAMS Canine Cancer Detection Studies, which gave them the funding to do more studies. However, John was not happy to just be a search and rescue and cancer detection dog. He also visits nursing home residents and cancer patients in his spare time.

Coptic Dog Name Considerations

The word Copt is derived from the Greek name Aigyptos, which was actually derived from Hikaptah, which is one of the names for Memphis, the first capital of Egypt. In more modern days, the name Coptic is related to Egyptian Christians. Although Ancient Egypt is known for its love of cats, the dog was just as popular and was domesticated in the Pre-Dynastic era to be used as hunters and companions.
