Introduction

Known as Gryzor in Europe, Contra debuted in 1987 as an arcade game. Video game geniuses at Konami must have known they had a gem on their hands, especially after Nintendo agreed to release a home version in 1988, once the arcade movement was dying due to consoles. Perhaps thanks to that adaptation of platform, or just because the game is just that good on its own, Contra remains one of the most remembered 80's games, and certainly one of the most talked about. So, if you've been looking for a retro game to name your dog after, Contra just may be it.

Contra Dog Name Considerations

There are always a few things to consider when naming a pet. You may want to be conscious of their gender, appearance, height, weight, or personality, for instance. Not every dog is the same, so celebrating those quirks that make your dog yours really resonates well. However, not everyone has the luxury of knowing much about their dog. If you're adopting, you don't really know anything about the dog until you adopt him or her. You won't know the age, gender, or breed until then. Only those who adopt through breeders truly know, and not everyone enjoys doing that.

For those of you rescuing a pup from a shelter, remember that you can also name the dog after one of your beloved games, in this case Contra. It doesn't require you to know anything about the dog, although it would surely be helpful. To make the process simple, start by gathering names that really bring back memories. Characters that you really enjoyed playing. Both male and female, so that whatever dog you find will get a name right away.

The following is a collection of names all derived from Contra characters, items, locations and developers. Hopefully, you'll find something that suits your fancy!
