Valerie

Valerie is an interesting case because she isn't quite a dog, at least not in the typical sense, that is. In the world of the Codename: Kids Next Door universe, there exist an incredibly dangerous and deranged breed of that hungers for the taste of children's homework. Worse still, these sadistic creatures have the frightening ability to transform their bodies into shapes that are virtually indistinguishable from a normal human being's. These terrifying creatures are referred to as Were-Poodles who, as their names imply, are similar to the mythological Werewolves found in many cultures around the world in a number of ways.

However, while werewolves are often said to only transform into hulking, lupine forms in the light of a full moon, the Were-Poodles from the Codename: Kids Next Door series are able to change their forms at will. Perhaps most frighteningly of all is the Were-Poodles insatiable need to devour the homework of nearby children within their vicinity. In the Codename: KND world, the expression "a dog ate my homework" takes on an entirely new meaning when one takes into account the existence of these menacing and vile creatures. Numbuh 2, Numbuh 4, and Numduh 5 all had the opportunity to witness the rage and furry of the Were-Poodle firsthand in the episode Operation: D.O.G.H.O.U.S.E.

During the episode the audience is introduced to Numbuh 5's next door neighbor, Valerie. Valerie had a particularly nasty attitude, as she constantly make snide and disparaging remarks towards Numbuh 4 and Numbuh 5 while the three of them were in class. The KND operatives brushed her rude comments off, but not long after Wally and Abby parted ways to head home was Numbuh 5 viciously attacked by a blonde furred Were-Poodle. Rather than make an attempt on Abby's life outright, the Were-Poodle went to town on Abigail's backpack, tearing her homework to ribbons right before her eyes.

As the episode continues on, Hoagie, Wally, and Abby learn the horrifying truth behind Wally's Were-Poodle aggressor; Valerie turns out to be the culprit behind the assault on Numbuh 5's homework. The three KND agents face off against Valerie, and the Were-Poodle gives them a run for their money in turn, but the operatives are ultimately able to best Valerie and incapacitate her. They bring Valerie in to their teacher to face punishment for her crimes, and Mrs. Thompson initially scolds Valerie for her recklessness. But after the KND agents leave, Mrs. Thompson reveals to Valerie that she is a Were-Poodle as well and the two villains laugh as they plot their next move.

Codename: Kids Next Door Name Considerations

While most of the Kids Next Door operatives are known simply by their codenames, their birth names often contain clever and well thought out allusions to their personality characteristics and status in the KND. Sector V, the name attributed to the main group of children that the series follows, each have names that creatively refer to their positions in the KND and their designated operative titles. The leader of Sector V, Nigel Uno, has the distinction of possessing a last name which just so happens to translate to the number 1 in Spanish. Hogarth "Hoagie" P. Gilligan Jr. is Sector V's technological whizkid whose status as a "jr." means that he's the second male in his family to possess his name.

Numbuh 3 is Sector V's medic; she's a high spirited Japanese girl named Kuki Sanban. Consequently, Kuki's last name is actually a play on the Japanese words for 3 (san) and number (ban). Wallabee Beatles is the fourth member of Sector V and the group's combat expert; his last name is a reference to the Beatles, who only ever had four members at any given time. Lastly, Numbuh 5 is the oldest member of the group and the second-in-command after Numbuh 1. Numbyh 5's birth name is Abigail Lincoln, and her last name is a reference to Abraham Lincoln, the man on the 5 dollar American bill. The show is filled with many more clever references and plays on words which a almost guaranteed to give your dog a witty name, should you base it off of a character, location, or weapon from the KND universe.
