Introduction
The Cirneco Dell’Etna is a sighthound that hails from Sicily. This streamlined, medium-sized hound has a delicate appearance, but is really extraordinarily fast. The Cirneco Dell’Etna is a rare breed in North America but has recently had a surge in popularity with their acceptance into the American Kennel Club. Finding a Cirneco Dell’Etna breeder in the United States might be a bit of a challenge, but naming your new puppy should not be as difficult. Since this breed originated in Sicily, it would be only natural to consider a name that has Sicilian roots. Some Italian names may be harder to pronounce, but many have meaningful names that would fit the personality of a Cirneco Dell’Etna puppy.
Cirneco Dell'Etna Dog Names In Pop Culture
Since the Cirneco Dell’Etna is still a relatively rare breed, many people would not recognize one if they encountered them at the dog park. However, fans of the Westminster Kennel Club’s annual all-breed dog show hosted at Madison Square Garden in New York City are becoming more familiar with the breed. The American Kennel Club officially recognized the Cirneco Dell’Etna in 2015 and they first appeared at the Westminster dog show in 2016. In 2017, Bella, or more formally known as Grand Champion Colisto’s Bella won best of breed and went on to compete in the hound group. Unfortunately, Bella did not win anything in the hound group. Bella was born in Russia on June 24, 2014. She is owned by Kathryn Schwabe and Goldah Magill. Her sire is Sirio Dell Gelso Bianco and her dam is Colisto’s Martina. Bella’s breeder, Tatiana Butt, owns Kolisto Kennels of Moscow, Russia. Kolisto Kennels is dedicated to preserving this ancient hound and was the first Russian kennel to begin breeding the Cirneco Dell’Etna. The owner, Tatiana Butt has worked hard to develop bloodlines that are free of any genetic disease and conform to the breed standard. Her dogs are not kenneled away from her home, instead, they are a part of the family and spend much time racing through the yard or lounging in her home.
The 2017 Westminster best of opposite sex winner for the Cirneco Dell’Etna was Zeus or Champion Cy’Era Zeus. Zeus was born December 4, 2016; his breeder is M. Lucia Prieto of Cy’Era Chirnechi. A best of opposite sex placement is a high honor, meaning they were the second best out of all the dogs of their breed represented at the dog show. It should be no surprise that Zeus caught the judge’s eye since his sire and dam are both grand champions; his sire is Grand Champion in Bronze Cy’Era Tazio and his dam is Grand Champion in Bronze Cy’Era Paola CM3. Cy’Era Cirnechi was founded in September of 1996 and has a long list of accomplishments including breeder of the 2012 Eukanuba best of breed and best of opposite sex winners, and the top Cirneco Dell’Etna in Italy for 2011. They also have multiple dogs that are European and World champions and Italian Specialty winners. Cy’Era Chirnechi was the first kennel in the United States to breed the Cirneco Dell’etna. They have imported over 40 dogs from Italy in order to preserve bloodlines. Cy’Era Chirnechi is also the co-founder of the Cirneco Dell’etna Club of America.
Cirneco Dell'Etna Dog Name Considerations
Once you have made the decision to add a Cirneco Dell’Etna to your family, you will need to come up with a name that aptly fits this elegant, surprisingly agile dog. Having their history steeped in Sicily, a strong Sicilian name just might be the right choice for your new companion. Granted, some names with Italian roots may be a bit difficult for younger members of the family to pronounce. However, there are many more that are short, easy to say, and have a great meaning behind them. Take your time when trying to decide on a name. You may even want to get to know your new puppy first so you fit them with a name that suits their personality as well as their nationality. The most difficult part about owning a Cirneco Dell’Etna should be what name to give them. The hardest part will be explaining to everyone you meet what type of dog they are. Most people will stare at you blankly when you tell them the pooch on the end of your leash is a Cirneco Dell’Etna. This will give you a great opportunity to meet people and educate them about this ancient, but not well-known breed.
