Here's the thing about Chrono Trigger: it features cats, not dogs. However, 1999's Chrono Cross does. This game, developed and published by Square for PlayStation, was the sequel to Chrono Trigger, and finally featured dogs, making a surprising amount of players happy.

In the game, a teen boy named Serge faces an alternate reality in which he died as a child. Like anyone else in his position, he is baffled and vows to discover more about the alternate reality. This leads to a journey, aided by a whopping forty-three other characters, in which Serge uncovers the past, faces challenges (Lynx, main nemesis), and more. But what about the dogs?

Well, when we think of Chrono dogs, we think of Poshul, Leena's pet. Leena is a determined teenage girl from this quaint little village called Arni. And Poshul lives in a hut, dog house and all. She even has a sign. You would see her running with children in town, or chomping down on some bones. But unlike so many dogs in video games these days, this one didn't just stay in town. When bribed by Serge, she went on missions.

It's after a Komodo scale quest that she really opens up and realizes how intense she can be in battle alongside Serge. Yes, she may be all about playtime and bones in the tiny village, but out there in the wild? She could hold her own! Some of her strengths were her huge HP (health) bar, the high attack power and her usefulness against early game enemies. Of course, like anyone else, Poshul wasn't amazing at everything. There were some weaknesses to deal with, like her low magic power. If anything, it posed just enough of a challenge to players without being a full-on annoyance.

And Poshul was interesting in that she could learn some special abilities. Although limited, they were pretty neat to use, especially in the 90's. One of them was K9-Ball, which Poshul learned after collecting 3 boss stars. For the skill, she could curl up into a ball and launch herself at an enemy, but only one. Like a pinball, she would bounce off this enemy with great force and speed, causing sparks to fly. It would have been nice if the ricochet had damaged surrounding enemies, but really, you only have a sole target with that skill. Regardless, Poshul was amazing, and is still one of the most useful dogs in video games ever.
