Rudolph

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer has been associated with Christmas since he appeared in 1939 in a promotional book commissioned by the Montgomery Ward Department Store. Written by one of the store’s copywriters, Robert L. May, the story of Rudolph’s Christmas-saving nose was published and given away to store patrons and their children. According to the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of Modern History, 2.4 million copies were given away the first year and Rudolph was established as a popular character representing the Christmas season.

Ten years later, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer became even more well-known when Robert May’s brother-in-law created a song about Rudolph and his heartwarming story. It was recorded in 1949 by the popular singer Gene Autry and quickly became one of the most-played records for many years to follow. Even today, the somewhat scratchy LP version can be heard on the radio and in many stores, among other outlets, from Thanksgiving to Christmas.

Rudolph’s range as a hero expanded further thanks to TV specials and movies, where his shiny red nose enabled Santa to deliver all the gifts on Christmas Eve. Loved by generations of fans, Rudolph appears as lawn ornaments, Christmas tree ornaments, and life-sized shopping plaza photo-op fixtures. Reciting all nine names of Santa’s reindeer often trips up those who try to remember them all, but no one forgets to include Rudolph!
