Introduction
The Chien D’Artois, or Artois Hound, is a considered a rare breed and is originally from the Picardy and Artois regions in northern France. The Chien D’Artois is a scent hound of medium size, used mainly by French nobility to track smaller game through the underbrush. They were first called the Picardy Hound or Picard and are believed to be one of the oldest native French breeds, dating back hundreds of years. It is believed the Chien D’Artois descended from the Saint Hubert Hound, or the Bloodhound. The Chien D’Artois can make an excellent family companion for anyone who understands the needs of a scent hound and provides plenty of daily interaction with them.
Chien D'Artois Dog Names In Pop Culture
Since the Chien D’Artois is such a rare breed, it is extremely uncommon to read about them in the news or notice a celebrity that has also fallen in love with the breed. There is only a handful of Chien D’Artois breeders scattered throughout northern France. While Otis, the overnight sensation for portraying tenacity and courage in the face of Hurricane Harvey, is not a Chien D’Artois, he does possess an uncanny ability to put his priorities straight and remain focused on his goal, similar to that of a Chien D’Artois. Videos and photos of Otis circulated around the internet during the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. This battle-weary canine was filmed trotting down the middle of the road carrying in his mouth a full bag of kibble. Otis was not a stray, but rather a beloved canine who had escaped during the hurricane and was later reunited with his family after his brief moment in the spotlight.
The Chien D’Artois is thought to have originated in the 15th century and was created to hunt smaller game through the thick underbrush in the northern regions of France. Many popular theories state that the Chien D’Artois is a descendant of the Bloodhound and probably also has the much loved Beagle in their ancestry as well to create a low-slung, mighty nosed dog able to track game for long distances. Royalty found this breed much to their liking and images of these dogs can be seen throughout history alongside some notable royals throughout France. It is not known whether or not the Chien D’Artois was ever gifted to royals or nobles outside of France, although some would argue that the Chien D’Artois may have influenced other breeds such as the Braque breeds that are so popular within France. The breed was much revered for their exceptional tracking capabilities and their loyal dispositions. The breed did eventually break off into two different sizes but in the early 1900s, both sizes once again became known as the Chien D’Artois. The Chien D’Artois is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but has been accepted by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as the Picardy Hound. The Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) has also recognized them as a breed and there are now around 500 total Chien D’Artois registered with the FCI.
Chien D'Artois Dog Name Considerations
You may find it a bit difficult to locate a Chien D’Artois within the United States. This is a rare breed scent hound that is not usually found outside of its native France. If your heart is set on acquiring a Chien D’Artois, you may have to be willing to import a puppy in from France, and that can become quite costly. However, this elusive hound just may be worth the effort. After you have found a Chien D’Artois to bring home, it will be time to begin searching for a name that does justice to this unique puppy. Being a French breed, you could begin looking at names steeped in French tradition or common French baby names.
Because the Chien D’Artois is a rare breed, you will probably be searching for a name that will make others sit up and take notice at the dog park. Spend the first few weeks of puppy ownership getting acquainted with your new Chien D’Artois. Learn about their personality and any funny little habits they have, and use that information as a way to find a name that best suits them. For example, a puppy that is timid and shy probably could not live up to the name Andrae since it means a mighty and manly defender. A timid puppy would probably do better named Patrik, which means he who is sensitive.
