Chien D'Artois Dog Names

Since the Chien D’Artois is such a rare breed, it is extremely uncommon to read about them in the news or notice a celebrity that has also fallen in love with the breed. There is only a handful of Chien D’Artois breeders scattered throughout northern France. While Otis, the overnight sensation for portraying tenacity and courage in the face of Hurricane Harvey, is not a Chien D’Artois, he does possess an uncanny ability to put his priorities straight and remain focused on his goal, similar to that of a Chien D’Artois. Videos and photos of Otis circulated around the internet during the devastation of Hurricane Harvey. This battle-weary canine was filmed trotting down the middle of the road carrying in his mouth a full bag of kibble. Otis was not a stray, but rather a beloved canine who had escaped during the hurricane and was later reunited with his family after his brief moment in the spotlight.

The Chien D’Artois is thought to have originated in the 15^th century and was created to hunt smaller game through the thick underbrush in the northern regions of France. Many popular theories state that the Chien D’Artois is a descendant of the Bloodhound and probably also has the much loved Beagle in their ancestry as well to create a low-slung, mighty nosed dog able to track game for long distances. Royalty found this breed much to their liking and images of these dogs can be seen throughout history alongside some notable royals throughout France. It is not known whether or not the Chien D’Artois was ever gifted to royals or nobles outside of France, although some would argue that the Chien D’Artois may have influenced other breeds such as the Braque breeds that are so popular within France. The breed was much revered for their exceptional tracking capabilities and their loyal dispositions. The breed did eventually break off into two different sizes but in the early 1900s, both sizes once again became known as the Chien D’Artois. The Chien D’Artois is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC), but has been accepted by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as the Picardy Hound. The Federation Cynologique Internationale (FCI) has also recognized them as a breed and there are now around 500 total Chien D’Artois registered with the FCI.
