Chart Polski Dog Names

Most people have probably never heard of the Chart Polski but may assume they were some type of Greyhound if they saw one in person or photo. The Chart Polski is not recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) but the United Kennel Club (UKC) and International All Breed Canine Association (IABCA) both recognize and allow them to compete in canine sports. Kathy Bentzoni of Kosmos Chart Polski is one of just a handful of breeders within the United States. Located in Pennsylvania, Bentzoni has spent a good deal of time and money researching the Chart Polski. She even imported Mars Celerrimus, or Mars for short directly from a breeder in Poland. Mars is to become one of her foundation dogs for her breeding program.

The history of the Chart Polski is based on a lot of speculation and pieced together history. It has been determined the Chart Polski is an ancient breed that was developed before people started keeping written records on dog breedings. Polish writer Gostomski referenced the Chart Polski in his book “Riding and Hunting” published in 1690. This book gave a detailed description of the Chart Polski including several charts showing the hunting methods and maintenance of the breed. This was the first written definitive record of the Chart Polski. Several theories have sprung up regarding the origins of the Chart Polski. It was once thought the breed actually was a direct descendant of the British Greyhound. They were developed in Poland but there have been historical references to the Chart Polski in other European countries. There have been documents uncovered that show Polish breeders claimed the Chart Polski was a completely separate breed from the Russian, Hungarian, and British Greyhounds. Writings published in the 1830s classified sighthounds in Poland into two distinctive groups: foreign sighthounds and Polish sighthounds. The only Polish sighthound listed is the Chart Polski. For this reason, the Chart Polski was heavily favored by Polish nobility. The Chart Polski was kept on vast estates and was used to hunt a wide array of small and large game. The popularity of the Chart Polski peaked in the 19^th century and has slowly been decreasing since then. It is becoming rare to find a Chart Polski outside of Poland with the exception of a handful of breeders in other European countries and the United States. There are no known Chart Polski breeders in Canada.
