Introduction
The Cesky Fousek is a medium sized, wire-haired multi-purpose hunting dog that is known by several names including Bohemian Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, Czech Coarsehaired Pointer, Slovakian Wirehaired Pointer, and Rough-Coated Bohemian Pointer. The Cesky Fousek was developed to aid hunters in the field, woodland, and water making them ideal for any type of terrain and any kind of game. Prior to World War I, they were one of the most popular pointing dogs in the areas of current Czech and Slovakian Republics. The Cesky Fousek is first and foremost a hunting dog and does have an over-abundance of energy. Most households are not able to provide the proper exercise requirements for this type of dog. A home where they will be able to get out and stretch their legs regularly is ideal.
Cesky Fousek Dog Names In Pop Culture
At one time the Cesky Fousek was becoming popular among hunters in North America and the Bohemian Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club of America (BWPGCA) was formed. Their popularity has waned a bit in recent years, but the BWPGCA is still active and you can find an overview of the males and females that are registered with the BWPGCA. There are a limited number of Cesky Fouseks within the United States and therefore breeders must work with a restricted gene pool before having to import new bloodlines in from Europe. Calina is one such import. Officially she is Calina Rokycanska Kotlina and she was imported in by a breeder closely associated with the BWPGCA in hopes of expanding the gene pool for other breeders.
The history of the Cesky Fousek is muddied and many claim that the breed is relatively new; however, there are others claiming the breed began during the 14th century. In a letter dated 1348 that was found and preserved, Vilem Zajic of Valdek stated that Kings Charles IV presented Margrave of Brandenburg, Ludwig with several hounds listed as Canis Bohemicus. Canis Bohemicus simply means Bohemian dog and is thought to be proof enough there were native Bohemian dogs in existence during this time. The letter failed to state the dogs’ coat type, color, or even size making it difficult to conclude with certainty that Zajic was indeed writing about the Cesky Fousek. The uncertainty of the 20th century was almost the complete downfall of the Cesky Fousek. When World War I ended in 1918 a new nation called Czechoslovakia was proclaimed but the Cesky Fousek was close to extinction. An association was formed in 1924 with the sole purpose of restoring the Cesky Fousek. It was difficult to find dogs with Cesky Fousek in their lineage, but after much perseverance, they began to recreate the breed. A new breed standard was approved in 1931 and the future looked bright. However, World War II would soon halt any progress that was made. The gene pool had been so far depleted that breeders had to crossbreed with German Shorthaired Pointers and Wirehaired Pointers. The FCI welcomed Czechoslovakia in 1957 but the road to FCI recognition for the Cesky Fousek would take longer. After having to prove at least three generations of pure breeding, the Cesky Fousek was recognized in 1964 by the FCI. The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not yet recognize the Cesky Fousek.
Cesky Fousek Dog Name Considerations
The Cesky Fousek is a rare medium-sized, versatile hunting dog with an abundance of energy. They must have a job to do and plenty of room to get out and run. You may want to begin your search for a Cesky Fousek by contacting the Bohemian Wirehaired Pointing Griffon Club of America (BWPGCA) and get a list of breeders closest to you. Expect to be on a waiting list for your new friend. Once you know you have a Cesky Fousek puppy coming home, be sure to puppy-proof your home and begin your search for the perfect name. Being a Bohemian breed, you should look for names that will give honor to their ancestry and use that Bohemian-inspired name to educate others about the breed. Make a list of names that catch your attention and do not be afraid to look outside the box for a name. Many times some of the most memorable dog names are those that you would usually not associate with a dog such as Chivalry or Saffron. Before settling on a name take the time to get to know your new Cesky Fousek puppy. They may help you find the right name once you know their personality.
