CatDog Inspired Dog Names

Over the years, Nickelodeon has been a constant source of entertainment through the different original shows they produce. A lot of these series have gone on to become television favorites, with the likes of SpongeBob Squarepants, The Rugrats, Hey Arnold and All That becoming staples in pop culture. During its run from 1998 to 2005, CatDog also enjoyed significant success and received positive reviews from both the audience and critics. The show also received a number of nominations from some award shows, such as the “Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in an Animated Television Production” category in the 1998 Annie Awards and “Favorite Cartoon” category in the 1999 and 2000 Kids’ Choice Awards.

The show CatDog focuses on the life of Felinius “Feline” Cat and Caninius “Canine” Dog, conjoined twin hybrids of a cat and dog, thus their name. The brothers live in the town of Nearburg, which is predominantly inhabited by anthropomorphic animals and other humanoid creatures. Out of the two brothers, Cat is the smarter and more cultured one while Dog is a bit naïve and clumsy at times. Because Cat can sometimes seem standoffish and a snob, Dog is more well-liked by the other creatures they encounter and is the more popular of the two.  

Because of his happy-go-lucky nature, Dog can be gullible and take everything he is told at face value. Hence, he almost always is the reason why the pair gets in some sort of trouble. He also has an overactive imagination and can be quite ambitious, doing something asked of him with full force. Additionally, Dog displays some typical canine behavior such as being distracted by garbage trucks, food, bones and balls. Despite these traits, however, Dog means well and is very loyal to Cat; he adores his brother and looks at him as a role model.

Dog is not the only canine character from the show; CatDog also features a gang of tough street dogs known as the Greaser Dogs. Considered the “bullies” of the show, the gang is composed of three canines named Cliff, Shriek and Lube. They are the show’s primary antagonists and the name of their gang is a reference to the greaser subculture. The Greasers love to make fun of others, particularly Cat, and usually pick on them by “pounding” them. Cliff is the leader of the gang who has a short temper and loves to hurt others while Shriek is the sole female member who also happens to be the smartest out of the three. The third and final member, Lube, is sweet but can be a bit dimwitted.
