Nancy

Given a challenge to come up with a human name that begins with N, many (if not most) would offer “Nancy.” The name has survived the various ebbs and flows of naming trends and there are still lots of humans walking around with it. It can be a nickname for Anna or Agnes, and its first use may have risen from the English name Ancy, with some insisting it started as a contraction of “mine Ancy.” Rising to its peak usage from 1934 to 1955, the name means “favor” or “grace” and comes from French and Hebrew roots, introduced to Britain in the 1300s. Some people include it in a mid- 20th-century trend of “Grandma names” which include Mildred, Mabel, Edna, and Iris, among others.

Famous people called Nancy include names from politics (Nancy Pelosi, Nancy Reagan), sports (Nancy Kerrigan), and musical celebrities (Nancy Sinatra). There’s also a Nancy in the popular television series, Stranger Things. Her character is a brave, inquisitive, and sometimes impulsive teen that moves in and out of the world of monsters and other creatures within her small town life. It sounds like a purrfect name for a cat!

A literary character known by many young and pre-teen girls is Nancy Drew, who figured in 56 books written from 1930 to 1979. Written by “Carolyn Keene” which is actually the pen name of several ghostwriters/authors, Nancy becomes embroiled in mysteries, clues, and problems. She’s a clever girl who is undaunted by the limitations put on young girls and women during the time when the stories began. The storyline has evolved over the years to reflect changes in female independence and roles, and Nancy is still popular today in the book series, TV, and movies.

While there seems to be a shortage of celebrity cats named Nancy, there is one who’s part of a feline duo named Sid and Nancy. Actress Jessica Alba has memorialized Sex Pistols rocker Sid Vicious and his love interest Nancy Spungen in her cats’ names. We can probably assume that Sid is a very vocal kitty.

Cat Names That Start with N Considerations

There are lots of N names that are purrfect for cats. The only one we don’t recommend is Naughty, but if your kitty is the epitome of high jinks, go fur it!

Black cats could be named Noir or Night, and Natasha or Nikolai are great names for Russian Blues. Even foods like Nesquik are up for grabs and names of cartoon characters, athletes, celebrities, and literary characters are all great places to start.

If your purr baby is stealthy and loves to jump out at you from under the bed or sofa, a fun name might be Ninja. Are you a tennis fan? If so, Nadal or Novak could pass muster, or if you love New York Yankees baseball, name your kitty Nestor for one of their All-Star pitchers, “Nasty” Nestor Cortes.
